The Doctoral Foreign Study Award (DFSA) provides special recognition and support to students who are pursuing a doctoral degree in a health-related field abroad.

Before beginning
Applicants and their supervisor(s) must make sure they have the following:
- a ResearchNet account
- a CIHR PIN in ResearchNet
- a Common CV account (applicant only)
Applicants and their supervisor(s) should each only have one ResearchNet account. If you have already accessed ResearchNet, do not register for a new account.

Please note that all the applications are processed through the CIHR ResearchNET portal even when it is indicated in the flowchart that you apply through the institution at which you were registered.
Please consult the description and application criteria for each of the scholarship (CGS D and DFSA) since there might be some differences.

Result Notification
CIHR will notify you of the results by the end of April via e-mail from [email protected].
Accepting or declining the scholarship
Offers must be accepted or declined by completing the Response to Offer task in ResearchNet and other required steps, if applicable. Please be sure to send all completed forms to the program contact by email at [email protected].
Payment Process
Activation of the payment process of an CIHR doctoral award can only be requested up to 2 months in advance of the award start date.
Timely submission of necessary documentation is crucial to avoid payment delays.
Steps to arrange CIHR Doctoral Award Payment
1. To request the first instalment, award recipients must complete the Confirmation of Commencement form on ResearchNet and submit a signed copy to CIHR by e-mail at [email protected] and c.c. [email protected].
2. After all required documents have been submitted to CIHR, an Authorization for Funding (AFF) document will be issued to you and the University, confirming that funding is being released. Forward the AFF to [email protected].
3. If you have requested and received approval from CIHR for a change in the start date, please also forward a copy of CIHR’s approval to [email protected].
