The Department of Emergency Medicine offers 2 and 4 week elective programs for Residents. Residents are paired with staff physicians.

Welcome to the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Ottawa Hospital!

Our two Emergency Departments are amongst the busiest in Canada and see a broad range of adult patient populations. This allows for excellent learning opportunities for residents of all training levels and specialty backgrounds. During your elective, you will work at both our Civic and General campuses. Our departments function as the regional Trauma, Stroke, Cardiac, Neurosurgical, and Cancer centers.

We offer 2 and 4 week electives to residents who are interested in additional adult Emergency Medicine training or who are interested in pursuing an application to our PGY3 CCFP-EM program.

In addition to on-shift teaching, elective residents are invited to participate in a high-fidelity simulation session specifically tailored to them, as well as our weekly Emergency Department Grand Rounds.

We understand the importance of the pre-CaRMS elective for those interested in our CCFP-EM program. For that reason, we do our absolute best to provide any interested PGY2 Family Medicine elective resident with an elective spot in July, August, or September. Please ensure that you apply for your elective as early as possible to facilitate this!

Please reach out if you have any questions. We look forward to working with you in our department!

For any questions, please contact Anma Batburen, [email protected].
