The University of Ottawa Family Medicine/Emergency Medicine Program provides world-class emergency medicine training to family physicians over an intensive 12 month period. Graduates of the program are trained to be able to work in any emergency department in the country, be community and educational leaders, and provide outstanding and compassionate care to each patient in the communities they serve.

Welcome from the Program Directors

Welcome to the University of Ottawa Family Medicine/Emergency Medicine Program.  Our intensive 12- month program will enhance your competence in emergency medicine skills and provide you with the skills to work in any emergency department in the country.  Our program has been offered since 1979 – the first of its kind in Canada and graduates of our program have had tremendous success in their careers.

The Department of Emergency Medicine at The Ottawa Hospital is home to many national and international experts in research, ultrasound, quality improvement and patient safety, medical education and simulation.  With over 90 physicians in our group with diverse academic interests, what they all have in common is a passion for emergency medicine and training residents. The immense dedication of our staff to the development of you as an emergency physician and investment in your training, is our program’s greatest strengths.

The terrific relationship that we have with the 5-year Royal College Program is unparalleled.  Residents in our CCFP-EM program are made to feel at home early on due to the friendly and inclusive FRCP resident group.  With shared social activities, resources, and various educational activities, you will quickly feel welcomed into our Ottawa Department of Emergency Medicine family.

Our program is small with only 5 total training spots per year (4 anglophone, 1 bilingual) which will give you more focused attention and provides more tailored learning opportunities throughout your training year.

Finally, Ottawa is an incredible place to live!  It is a beautiful urban, multicultural city with great nightlife, fantastic restaurants and active music, arts and cultural scenes. There are more festivals in Ottawa than any city in Canada celebrating everything from poutine and beer to all musical genres. Ottawa is a city for the active as well with Gatineau park minutes away it has hundreds of kms of mountain biking/hiking and cross-country ski trails in addition to amazing road cycling. Within the city we have extensive biking/running/walking paths as well as beaches. In the winter there is of course skating on the Rideau Canal or cross cross-country skiing right in the city. We also have a half dozen ski hills within an hour. Our department is very active and you can always find someone to recreate with!

Welcome from the Chiefs

Welcome to the Family Medicine/ Emergency Medicine Program at the University of Ottawa!

Aside from poutine and shawarma, Ottawa is also known for being home to the oldest CCFP-EM program in Canada, and one of the best Emergency Departments in the world. With a 100% pass rate on the CCFP-EM exam in the past five years, the education that we receive is second to none.

The highlights of the program include exposure to the substantial acuity inherent in being the regional tertiary care centre, tailored academic teaching from world renowned leaders in medical education, high fidelity simulation, and an extensive point of care ultrasound curriculum. We also have access to some of the leading researchers in emergency medicine who are available to supervise our academic projects throughout the year.

We are fortunate to have an excellent relationship with our FRCPC colleagues who are a great support to our program. We have a resident retreat every year that allows residents to get to know each other better outside of the hospital, and an annual welcome BBQ to welcome all new members to the Ottawa DEM family.

Outside of work, there is no shortage of wellness in the Nation’s Capital. With over 800km worth of bike paths within the city, après-shift skiing and hiking 30 minutes away, and fine dining and shawarma around every corner, you’ll love our city almost as much as you’ll love our program.

Lastly, in the extraordinary times of the COVID-19 pandemic, many resident electives have been cancelled over the summer. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us, as we would be happy to discuss our amazing program!

Kind regards,

David and Wilson (Chief Residents 2020-2021)
