Chair

Duane Green BSocSc 1994 (Economics)

Duane Green was president and CEO of Franklin Templeton Investments Canada and of Fiduciary Trust Company of Canada. Leveraging more than 20 years of experience in the financial services industry, he oversees Franklin Templeton’s Canadian business.

Mr. Green was a vice-president at an international insurer before joining Franklin Templeton in 2004 as vice-president, strategic alliances. He then served as Franklin Templeton’s head of institutional, Canada and then as managing director - Canada, where he was responsible for the firm's Canadian retail, institutional and HNW distribution business. Mr. Green is now chair of the board and director of Franklin Templeton Investments Corp., director of Fiduciary Trust Company of Canada and chair and director of FTC Investor Services Inc. He also serves as president, CEO and director of both Templeton Growth Fund Ltd and Franklin Templeton Corporate Class Funds Ltd.

He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Investment Funds Institute of Canada (IFIC), the Canadian Coalition for Good Governance (CCGG) and Business for the Arts (BftA). He also sits on the pension committee of Canada’s National Ballet School and is a past board member of Canada’s National Ballet School and of Crohn’s and Colitis Canada. In 2017, he received the Women in Capital Markets Male Leadership Award.

Mr. Green earned a degree in economics at the University of Ottawa and is a fellow of the Canadian Securities Institute. He holds the FMA, CIM, and FCSI designations.

Julie Barker-Merz BSocSc 1995 (Political Science and Criminology)

As Senior Vice-President of the South Western Ontario Division of the Bank of Montreal, Julie Barker-Merz leads a team of retail and business banking professionals across 11 markets and 150 branches, from Owen Sound to Niagara Falls and through to London and Windsor.  Prior to her most recent appointment, Julie was president of BMO InvestorLine and the executive sponsor of BMO’s  “Women & Wealth” strategic initiative.  She sits on the boards of the Greater Kitchener Chamber of Commerce and of TheMuseum in Kitchener. She is also an advisor to sheEO’s Radical Generosity movement, and is a former director and treasurer of the Canadian Women’s Hockey League.  Julie Barker-Merz is a strong, long-standing supporter of women in business, sport and the community: in 2015, she received a Top 100 World of Difference award from The International Alliance of Women (TIAW), and in 2016, she was named one of Canada’s Top 50 to Watch in Wealth Management.

Julie received her undergraduate degree in political science and criminology from the University of Ottawa, where she was president of the Student Federation in 1995-1996.  She earned the designation of Fellow, Institute of Canadian Bankers from the Canadian Securities Institute, and completed her MBA at Dalhousie University.

Sam Boutziouvis, BSc 1983 (Biochemistry), BSocSc 1984 (Economics)

In December 2012, Sam Boutziouvis was named Vice-President of Government Relations and Multilateral Development Institutions for SNC-Lavalin Group Inc. In this position, he manages the company’s relationship with the Government of Canada and maintains ongoing relationships with national and international industry associations and multilateral development institutions. Sam Boutziouvis has also held positions with the Canadian Council of Chief Executives, culminating in over twenty years’ experience in this field. He graduated from the University of Ottawa in 1983 with a BSc in biochemistry, and in 1984, he went on to earn a BSocSc in economics, before graduating from Carleton University with a master’s degree in public administration in 1987.

Hubert Marleau BSocSc 1967 (Economics)

Mr. Hubert R. Marleau is the Economist and Co-Founder of Palos Management. He is President, Founder and Director of Palos Capital Corporation (“Palos”) and has worked at the senior executive level of several large investment banks notably, Nesbitt Thomson Inc., Levesque Beaubien Inc. and Marleau, Lemire Inc. With over 45 years of experience in the investment and financial community, Mr. Marleau is a leading figure in Canada’s financial community. He is or has been a board member of over 50 publicly traded companies and has raised funds privately and publicly for hundreds of emerging and mature companies, structured numerous mergers and acquisitions, and driven numerous financial deals in Canada. Mr. Marleau graduated from the University of Ottawa with an Honours Bachelor of Science in Economics.

Shawn Singh, BSocSc 1998 (Political Science/Sociology)

Shawn Singh is currently General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer at DW Partners LP, a New York firm that manages billions of dollars in assets. Previous to this, he worked as an associate at several law firms in New York, including Fried Frank Harris Shriver & Jacobson LLP, Dewey LeBoeuf LLP, and Fulbright Jaworski LLP. Prior to his successful legal career, Shawn Singh worked as a private banker in Nova Scotia. In addition to receiving several business awards, he is the recipient of the Commonwealth Leadership Award and the Governor General's Award for Excellence. In 1998, Shawn Singh graduated from the University of Ottawa with a BSocSc in political science and sociology before going on to earn a JD at the Brooklyn Law School in 2002.

Steven Stein PhD 1978 (Clinical Psychology)

Dr. Steven Stein is a clinical psychologist and the founder and CEO of Multi-Health Systems (MHS), a leading psychological test publishing company. MHS produces the world’s premier emotional intelligence assessments, as well as other leading psychological assessments. He is a former assistant professor in the psychiatry department at the University of Toronto, as well as a former adjunct professor at York University. Dr. Stein has authored and coauthored several books in his field, including the international best-seller The EQ Edge: Emotional Intelligence and Your Success, along with Make Your Workplace Great: The 7 Keys to an Emotionally Intelligent OrganizationThe Student EQ Edge: Emotional Intelligence and Your Academic and Personal Success; and Emotional Intelligence for Dummies. Throughout his career, he has provided consultant services to several major organisations, including the Canadian Armed Forces and American Express, and has worked with reality TV shows such as Big Brother Canada. Dr. Stein earned a master’s degree in psychology in 1976 and was awarded a PhD in clinical psychology from the University of Ottawa in 1978.

Rita Theil BSocSc 1986 (Political Science/Management and public policy), MBA 1990, LLB 1990

Ms Theil is a corporate lawyer, an investment banker and a business owner.  She serves as a board director of public and private companies, in Canada, the United States and Europe.  She is a Chartered Director, and has served on the boards of the flagship utility Scottish Water plc, renewable energy company Sierra Geothermal Power Corporation and NASDAQ-listed Global Water Resources Inc.  Since 2004, Ms. Theil has been the CEO of JacKryn Holdings Inc., a financial advisory firm focused on board governance, interim executive management, and the sponsorship of women at board level. Ms. Theil has over 25 years of experience advising governments, public and private boards, and global utilities companies.
