Our vision is to transform the prevention and treatment of brain-heart interconnected conditions, improving the health and quality of life of Canadians and people worldwide.

Experts from the University of Ottawa and affiliated research institutes, the uOttawa Brain and Mind Research Institute, the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, aim to be the global leaders in this new area of research, and bring benefits to Canadians and worldwide in diagnosis, treatment, and improved health and well-being. Researchers from McGill University, the University of Saskatchewan and more than 45 other academic, industry and governmental and non-governmental partners worldwide will collaborate to this unique initiative.

Our Research

Brain and Heart models with a stethoscope.

We seek to improve the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of concurrent brain heart-mind conditions through integrated collaboration among brain, heart and psychiatric researchers; patients, physicians and partners across academia, industry and government; and community organizations. Learn more about the BHI here.

As a mission-driven research and knowledge mobilization platform, the BHI model is built on two main research foundations: Clinical/Epidemiology, and Basic Science/Discovery, and incorporates four research priorities: Therapeutics; Biomarkers and Imaging Tools; Precision Prevention across the Life Trajectory; and Health Systems and Models of Care. It uses a life trajectory approach and looks to take innovations from bench to bedside and back. The transformational platforms bring together over 30 investigators from 5 institutions, each with expertise in foundation, theme, and cross-cutting areas. These platforms include core facilities designed to enhance capacity and support brain-heart projects.
