Please note that a minimum grade of 70% is required in any course used to satisfy a teachable-subject requirement.

Studies in Canada

A strict minimum GPA of 75% is required. This average is calculated based on your 10 best full-year undergraduate courses or your 20 best one-term undergraduate courses completed before September 1 preceding your enrolment in the program.

Prerequisite courses required for teachable subjects are included in the calculation only if they are among your highest grades.

If you have completed fewer than 20 undergraduate courses, all courses completed before the application deadline will be included in the calculation.
Grades earned in college, CEGEP or graduate-level studies are not included in the GPA calculation.

Studies abroad

A strict minimum of 75%, calculated from your undergraduate university annual grade point average (for example, 11/20, pass or satisfactory)
Please note that a minimum grade of 70% is required in any course used to satisfy a teachable-subject requirement.

English-language proficiency requirements

You must provide proof of English-language proficiency if:

• you studied in a country where English is not an official language; and
• you have not completed at least three consecutive years of full-time study in English or an Ontario Grade 12 English course (ENG4U).

In this case, you must achieve the minimum required score on one of the tests listed below. Test results must be dated within two years of enrolment in the program.

• TOEFL: Internet-based test with a minimum of 24 in each of the four skills
• New TOEFL: Internet-based test with a minimum of 5 in each of the four skills (starting January 2026)
• IELTS (Academic): minimum of 7.0 in each of the four skills
• PTE TEST: minimum of 65 in each of the four skills

Duolingo and TOEFL Essentials and IELTS General are not accepted.

French proficiency test for FSL

The French as a Second Language Proficiency Test is mandatory for all applicants to the FSL teaching subject, including those whose first language is French or who studied in French or French immersion. No other language test may be used as a substitute.

After applying, you can register and pay the test fee through the link in your uoZone account. Be sure to prepare for the test in advance by reviewing information about the French proficiency test.

This test may only be taken once per year.

A French test is mandatory to teach FSL. Refer to the section French proficiency test for FSL teaching subject below.

French immersion certificates or being a fluent French speaker does not replace French courses to satisfy the FSL teaching subject.

To teach a specific subject — also referred to as a teachable subject (e.g., French, Geography, Biology) — you must have completed the required number of university courses in that subject for the division you wish to teach. Please note that a full-year course is equivalent to two one-term courses.

Studies in Canada: One one-term course must be at least 3 credits or 0.5 depending on the credit-weight system. 

Studies abroad: One one-term course must be at least 6 ECTS.

• Courses completed at the college level may be considered to satisfy a teaching subject, only if they have been taken as part of a two-year diploma. Otherwise, you must complete university courses.
• Courses at the graduate level may be considered to satisfy a teaching subject, if you have completed an undergraduate university degree.
• Courses completed in a non-accredited university will not be considered to satisfy a teaching subject prerequisite.

The Faculty of Education offers a few places for specific groups. Note that you must still satisfy the minimum requirements.
