ESL 1210 - Beginner Reading/Listening Skills 

Introduction to the English language with a focus on Reading and Listening Skills to develop comprehension of elementary oral and written expression with vocabulary relevant to the workplace and grammatical structures. Practice with second language learning strategies for understanding written text, basic conversations and note-taking in the university context.

Cours d’initiation aux notions de base de l’anglais centré sur les habiletés de lecture et de compréhension orale et le vocabulaire et la grammaire du discours du travail. Activités de perfectionnement axées sur les stratégies d’apprentissages pour la compréhension de textes écrits, la tenue de conversations simples et la prise de notes en contexte universitaire.

ESL 1212 - Elementary Speaking/Writing Skills

Introduction to basic English language Speaking and Writing skills including grammar, vocabulary, spelling and pronunciation. Development of oral communication through guided conversation and short presentations related to the university workplace. Written expression at the sentence level. Language learning strategies for language production in the university context.

Activités de perfectionnement de la communication orale à travers des conversations dirigées et de courts exposés reliés au milieu du travail. Exercices d’expression écrite au niveau de la phrase et présentation de stratégies de production langagière en contexte universitaire.

ESL 2201 - Oral Communication Workshop

The level of the English workshop in Oral Communication Skills depends on the level of the majority of participants who register. OLBI reserves the right to cancel any course with insufficient course enrollment.

ESL 2221 - Intermediate Reading/Writing Skills

Development of reading skills and strategies as a basis for writing a variety of university workplace texts (memos, email, summaries) at the paragraph level. Refinement of grammatical and vocabulary knowledge for the university context.

Révision et perfectionnement des habiletés lecture et des stratégies de bases pour la production écrite en milieu de travail universitaire (courriel, mémo, résumé) au niveau du paragraphe. Révision des ressources grammaticales et lexicales à la base de textes produits en milieu universitaire.

ESL 2222 - Intermediate Listening/Speaking Skills 

Development and refinement of listening and speaking skills as a basis for oral communication in the university workplace. Introduction to critical listening. Practice in note-taking. Production of extended oral discourse. Use of formal and informal registers. Refinement of vocabulary and grammar use and pronunciation skills.

Révision et perfectionnement des habiletés d’écoute et de production orale nécessaire à la communication en milieu de travail universitaire. Mise en pratique de stratégies d’écoute critique, de prise de notes et à la participation dans des interactions de durée prolongée. Introduction aux registres familiers et semi-formels. Renforcement des connaissances grammaticales, lexicales et phonologiques.

ESL 2310 – Intermediate Listening/Speaking Skills – Medical and Health Sciences-related

Development and refinement of listening and speaking skills as a basis for oral communication in the business and health sciences context. Introduction to critical listening. Practice in note-taking. Production of extended oral discourse. Use of formal and informal registers. Refinement of vocabulary and grammar use, and pronunciation skills

ESL 2311 – Intermediate Reading/Writing Skills – Medical and Health Sciences-related

Development of reading skills and strategies as a basis for writing a variety of texts (summaries, reports, reviews) at the paragraph level. Refinement of grammatical and vocabulary knowledge for the field of business and/or health sciences.

ESL 2201 - Oral Communication Workshop

ESL 3310 – Advanced Listening /Speaking Skills – Medical and Health Sciences-related

Development of critical listening and speaking abilities. Focus on listening strategies and skills in context-reduced speech with varied delivery rates and text types. Systematic exposure to a variety of registers and accents. Practice in understanding the language of meetings, appointments, and interaction in a range of health science contexts with some note-taking. Development of skills for fluent and accurate oral language use in a wide range of administrative and/or health science-related situations as well, including conversation management and self-monitoring skills. Refinement of vocabulary and grammar use, and pronunciation skills.

ESL 3311 – Advanced Reading/Writing Skills – Medical and Health Sciences-related

Refinement of reading skills and strategies with regard to a variety of different types of extended texts relevant to the administrative and/or health sciences context. Introduction to critical reading and analysis of idea development. Practice in recognizing tone, intent, bias, and attitude. Development and organization of administrative and/or health sciences-related expository prose in English with an analysis of both formal and informal registers. Practice in achieving appropriateness and accuracy of expression; advanced vocabulary development.

ESL 3431 - Advanced Listening/Speaking Skills

Development of listening strategies and skills in context-reduced speech with varied delivery rates and text types. Systematic exposure to a variety of registers and accents. Practice in understanding the language of meetings and assemblies, and taking notes. Development of critical listening skills. Development of skills for fluent and accurate oral language use in a wide range of university workplace situations. Development of conversation management and self-monitoring skills. Refinement of vocabulary and grammar use and pronunciation skills.

ESL 3441 - Advanced Reading/Writing Skills

Refinement of reading skills and strategies with regards to a variety of different types of extended texts relevant to the university workplace such as reports. Introduction to critical reading and analysis of idea development. Practice in recognizing tone, intent, bias, and attitude. Development and organization of expository prose in English of the workplace in formal and informal registers. Practice in achieving appropriateness and accuracy of expression; vocabulary development.
