The Health Sciences Library at the RGN campus has one 3D printer available for use on a first-come, first-served basis. Our printer model is the Ultimaker 2 Extended +.
Free 3D models are widely available online if you prefer not to create your own. Most models are provided as STL files. To prepare your file for printing, you will need to download the free Ultimaker Cura software. Cura converts STL files into a format the printer can read (gcode).
We recommend bringing a laptop with Cura installed so you can make adjustments to your file while on site. Alternatively, you may save your gcode file to your own SD card and bring it with you. However, without a laptop to make changes, you will not be able to modify your file once you arrive.
We maintain a locked cabinet containing filament, an SD card, SD card adapters, and other accessories. The cabinet key can be borrowed from the RGN Library service desk using your student or employee card. The key may be checked out for up to four hours at a time. You may borrow it to set up your print, return it while your file is printing, and check it out again later to collect your completed item.
Cura will provide an estimated print time.
We ask that:
- All prints be picked up promptly once completed
- All prints finish before the library closes
- The printer be turned off at closing time
- All borrowed items are returned to the cabinet and locked
Trained staff are available to assist with the 3D printer Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. You may still use the printer after 7:00 p.m. and on weekends, but staff assistance will not be available. For your first few prints, we strongly recommend visiting when trained staff are available.
If you are interested in additional 3D printing services, the uOttawa Richard L’Abbé Makerspace in the STEM Building on main campus also offers 3D printing access and workshops.
