1. You need to be Currently enrolled at the University of Ottawa or Saint-Paul University in a master’s or PhD program at the time of the uOGRADflix Competition.
2. Master’s and PhD students who have completed the requirements of their degree but have not yet graduated by the registration deadline are eligible to participate.
3. Agree to allow your video to be made public. If you are selected as a finalist, your photo and biography will also be made public.
4. By submitting your video, you are agreeing that your submission is an original work created by you and that you have all necessary rights in, and to, the submission. More detailed information is available in Copyright section under Ressources and tools.
5. Your video may be in English, French or bilingual.
6. Previous finalists who did not win a prize are eligible to compete again. Their video must be considerably different than last submission.

The jury will award prizes to the best videos according to the following criteria:

• 70% Communication
  • Ability to explain complex ideas to a non-specialist audience
  • Clear communication of the research subject, contribution and results, if applicable
  • Use of clear language and terminology, delivered at a good pace
  • Logical sequence of information (i.e.: easy to follow)
  • Ability to be compelling to your audience
• 30% Creativity, visual impact and technical quality
  • Original presentation of information
  • Effective use of images to strengthen the message
  • Visually appealing and engaging (movement and rhythm)
  • Sound and image quality 

Attend one of the feedback sessions (optional) to receive comments about your video or to answer your questions. You can reserve an appointment via Bookings. 

When creating your video, keep copyright in mind. Since your video will be posted online, you will need to make sure that you are using third-party content properly.

Abstracts, oral descriptions, slides, pictures, and videos may all constitute public disclosure and affect intellectual property rights and patentability. If this may be a concern, check with your supervisor, the Office of Research, or the uOttawa Copyright webpage for further information.

You also agree that this submission does not infringe upon or violate any laws or any third-party rights, including, but not limited to, copyright, patent, trademark, trade secret, or other proprietary rights, and must not constitute material that would be considered libelling, defamatory, a privacy violation, tortious, or a contract breach.

While we encourage students to use their original content to develop their communication and creativity skills, we recognize that AI technology is becoming increasingly prevalent.

Students are allowed to use it to edit, translate, brainstorm, revise or enhance their script or video. They must acknowledge and properly cite its use within the video.

Keep the following guidelines in mind:

• Security and Data Protection: Refrain from entering sensitive or private information while using AI tools.
• Quality: Thoroughly review and validate all content which AI-generated for your project.
• Transparency and Disclosure: Clearly indicate that you have used generative AI to review, develop content or generate voice or video.
• Originality and Creativity: Use AI only as a tool to enhance your creative process, rather than relying on automated generation.
