Message from the Division Head

The Division comprises more than 25 members, many of whom provide obstetrical care to over 85% of all patients delivered at The Ottawa Hospital. Many of the Generalists provide care in more than one language and more than half of the Generalists provide care and education in both official languages.

The majority of our members deliver most clinical services in private office settings, allowing a proportionately greater allocation of scarce hospital resources to our patients.

The Division of Generalists in Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Newborn Care prides itself on the provision of safe, effective care and has undertaken numerous initiatives in patient safety, quality assurance, and evidence-based medicine. These include:

  • Development of quality indicators and incident review processes (The Ottawa Hospital General and Civic Campus Quality Assurance Committees and Perinatal Care Committees)
  • Development of clinical practice guidelines and clinical pathways
  • Implementation of clinical efficiencies to reduce length of stay and resource utilization, resulting in many major procedures being carried out in the ambulatory setting
  • Optimization of ambulatory clinical care to improve access to tertiary ambulatory gynecology services
  • Development of partnerships with community hospitals to centralize referrals and improve access to gynecology surgical care

Through our commitment to excellence in clinical care, we play an integral role in supporting the recruitment and participation of patients and staff in the Department’s research activities.

Our strong commitment to teaching is reflected in the significant amount of undergraduate and postgraduate medical education provided at The Ottawa Hospital. The teaching support offered by the Generalist Division is essential to achieving our broader educational goals.
