Applying to Teacher Education at uOttawa

To be considered for admission, you must meet the minimum eligibility requirements for your chosen Teacher Education program.

Admission is competitive, and meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission.

Basic eligibility requirements

You must:

• Hold, or be in the process of completing, an undergraduate university degree before entering the program.
• Have completed a degree from an accredited institution.
• Meet the academic and program-specific admission requirements.
• Complete any required admission assessments or language tests.
• Meet any teachable-subject prerequisites required for your chosen division.

Undergraduate degree requirements

Your degree must be recognized by an accredited authority authorized to grant university-level credentials.

Eligible credentials generally include:

• Canadian university bachelor’s degrees (minimum 90 credits or equivalent).
• Four-year honours bachelor’s degrees awarded by Ontario colleges.
• International university degrees deemed equivalent to a Canadian undergraduate degree of at least 180 ECTS in the same program (e.g., licentiate, engineering degree).

Admission decisions are based on a combination of:

Academic performance (GPA)

Your academic average represents 60% of the admission assessment. Applicants must meet the minimum GPA requirement, as applications with an average below the required threshold will be automatically rejected.

CASPer test

As part of your application, you must complete the CASPer test in addition to meeting the minimum and division-specific academic requirements.

CASPer is an online situational judgment test that assesses the personal and professional skills relevant to teaching. The assessment takes approximately 65 to 85 minutes and accounts for 40% of the admission decision.

Applications submitted without a CASPer result are considered incomplete and will not be reviewed. CASPer results are valid for one admission cycle only, and a new test must be completed each time you apply.

Only one Casper test is required for all your Teacher Education program choices. If you apply to more than one Teacher Education option, you do not need to complete multiple Casper tests.

Important: If you also apply to a Formation à l’enseignement (French-language) program, you must complete the French version of the Casper test in addition to the English version.

Registering for the CASPer test

Register directly through the Acuity Insights website.

Testing dates are limited and may fill quickly. To allow sufficient time for identity verification and payment processing, we recommend registering at least three business days before your preferred test date.

Your CASPer results are sent directly to the University of Ottawa Admissions Office. You do not need to submit them yourself.

Language proficiency requirements, where applicable

You may be required to provide proof of language proficiency if:

Teacher Education (English)

• Your previous studies do not meet the Faculty’s English-language requirements.
• You have selected French as a Second Language (FSL) as one of your teachable subjects.

Formation à l’enseignement (French)

• A French proficiency test is required for all applicants.
• You wish to teach English (First Language) and your previous studies do not meet the Faculty’s English-language requirements.

Teachable-subject prerequisites, where applicable

Depending on the division you wish to teach, you may need university coursework in one or more teachable subjects.

Teaching divisions include:

• Primary/Junior (Kindergarten to Grade 6)
• Junior/Intermediate (grades 4 to 10)
• Intermediate/Senior (grades 7 to 12)

Important information about admissions

• There is no mature student admission category for these programs.
• The number of available spaces is limited.
• Applicants with the strongest admission scores are offered priority consideration.
• The University may request additional documentation to assess an application.
• Applicants are responsible for ensuring all required documents are received by the applicable deadlines.
• Resumes, business cards, letters explaining extenuating circumstances and any other unsolicited documents are not considered in the admission process.
• Admission decisions are based solely on your academic average and CASPer score (and, where applicable, the French proficiency test for applicants to the French as a Second Language teaching subject).

1. Apply through the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre (OUAC).
2. Complete the required TEAS form as part of your application.
3. Rank your program choices in order of preference.
4. Declare all current and previous postsecondary studies, including any undergraduate, graduate or professional programs attended. If you have a master’s or a PhD, you must still include your undergraduate studies (e.g., bachelor’s, licentiate, engineering degree) as graduate studies are not considered an admission requirement.

Part-time: Admissions to the Formation à l’Enseignement – Temps Partiel program is suspended for 2027.

Program selection

Applicants may apply to more than one Faculty of Education program if eligible.

However:

• You will receive a maximum of one offer per program.
• Your ranking of choices may affect which offer you receive.
• If you are admitted to your first-choice option within a program, lower-ranked options in that same program may no longer be considered.

• Any omission of previous postsecondary studies may delay the review of your application.

Track your application

You will receive an email acknowledging receipt of your application within two weeks of applying. This message sometimes ends up in applicants’ spam folders, so be sure to check yours. If you have not received an email acknowledging receipt two weeks after applying, contact us.

Be sure not to lose the email acknowledging receipt, as it contains instructions on how to log in to the uoZone student portal to track your application. It also includes your student number, uoAccess ID and password. You are responsible for checking your uoZone account regularly for missing documents.

Required documents

• Undergraduate degree and diploma
• Admission is based on your undergraduate studies. Graduate studies (e.g., master’s, DESS or PhD) are not considered admission requirements.
• If you hold a graduate degree, you may submit it to receive bonus points: 
  • Master’s degree: 1%
  • PhD: 2%

Transcripts

If you studied in Canada or the United States, you do not need to submit your diploma if your transcript confirms your degree has been awarded. If you studied outside Canada or the United States, you must submit a copy of your undergraduate diploma or proof of completion.

• Upload transcripts for all years of undergraduate study as a single PDF file (for example, studies abroad: DEUG 1 and 2 + licentiate or BTS1 and 2 + licentiate, DUT1 and 2 + licentiate, licentiate 1 + 2 + 3) through uoDoc. [FD7.1]
• Transcripts submitted through OUAC should be sent immediately. Do not wait for final grades, as they will not be included in your admission average.
• If you attended Saint Paul University, you must submit those transcripts.
• You do not need to submit University of Ottawa transcripts.
• Transcripts from graduate or postdoctoral studies are not required.

Official documents and translations

The transcripts uploaded to uoDoc are considered unofficial for admission review purposes. If you receive an offer of admission, you will be required to provide official transcripts issued by the institution and bearing an official seal, or copies certified by a notary, lawyer or commissioner for oaths.

Third-party evaluations or credential assessments (such as WES or an Évaluation comparative des études effectuées hors du Québec) are not accepted as substitutes for official transcripts or diplomas.

Documents issued in a language other than French or English must include:

• a copy of the original document; and
• an official French or English translation provided by the issuing institution or an authorized translator.

Translations alone are not sufficient.

Submit documents 

Log in to uoZone to view the documents required for your application. You are responsible for uploading all required documents through uoDoc by the deadline and for checking your account regularly for missing documents, updates, comments or admission decisions. 

French and French as a second language proficiency test results are submitted directly by the Faculty. All other required documents must be received by the deadline. Incomplete applications may be cancelled without notice. 

The University of Ottawa may request additional documentation at any time to assess your application. All submitted documents become the property of the University and will not be returned. 

Applications completed by the November 1 deadline will be prioritized. To increase your chances of admission, you should complete your file by December 1st.

Offers of admission are issued on an ongoing basis until we reach our enrolment targets for each division and teaching subject. You will receive a communication once a decision is made, but we suggest also checking your uoZone account for any updates. 

You may only receive one offer per program. If admitted to your first choice, you will not be considered for your second or third choice within the same program. 

Waitlist

Because the number of available spaces is limited, admission offers are made to applicants with the highest admission scores. Offers are based on the applicant’s teaching subject, division and the number of spaces available in each area. As a result, you may be placed on a waiting list.

If you are placed on a waiting list, you will remain on it until a space becomes available or until the program reaches full capacity. The waiting list may remain active until the first week of classes; however, the faculty may close it earlier if needed.

Even if the faculty extends the application deadline, some applicants may still be placed on a waiting list because available spaces may vary depending on the teaching subject and division.

The waiting list is not ranked. This means that applicants are not assigned a specific position on the list. Admission offers are made to applicants with the strongest qualifications based on available spaces. Therefore, we cannot predict your chances of receiving an offer of admission.

Accept your offer

You must accept or decline the offer before the deadline. If you accept, a non-refundable deposit is required by the deadline indicated in your offer. If you’re on a waiting list and wish to remain on it, make sure you also respond before the deadline. Information concerning the waiting list can be found in our FAQ below.

If you are waiting for a decision from a non-Education program or from another institution, you may still accept your current offer before the deadline to secure your place. Accepting an offer will not affect any admission decisions that are still pending elsewhere.
