When a doctor makes a medical recommendation to a patient, what does the patient understand? Should a doctor – the medical expert – impose a decision on a patient? Or should a patient – the one who experiences the symptoms and their effects – be the one to choose how they are treated?

Professor Audrey Ferron Parayre explored this complicated topic in depth in her book Donner un consentement éclairé à un soin : réalité ou fiction?(Éditions Yvon Blais, 2020), which has now been recognized by the Fondation du Barreau du Québec (FBQ), earning an honourable mention in the 2022 legal writing competition in the “New Author” category.

Professor Ferron Parayre’s book focuses on how clinical practices in healthcare relate to the legal standards that are put in place to protect doctors and patients. Using an interdisciplinary and empirical approach, she examines the significant gaps between what the law says about informed consent and what is actually experienced in clinical practice.

The winner of the 2022 prize in the “New Author” category is Professor Miriam Cohen of the Université de Montréal, for her book Realizing Reparative Justice for International Crimes: From Theory to Practice (Cambridge University Press, 2020). Also receiving an honourable mention in the category is Professor Jérémie Torres-Ceyte, also of the Université de Montréal, for his book Les contrats et les droits fondamentaux : perspective franco-québécoise (Éditions Yvon Blais, 2021).

The FBQ has held its legal writing competition on an annual basis since 1984, rewarding legal writers who have distinguished themselves through their contributions to legal discourse.

Congratulations to Professor Ferron Parayre on this exceptional achievement!
