Students who wish to complete one semester or one full year of their law studies at the University of Ottawa as visiting students can apply to study with us on a Letter of Permission.

Students who have successfully completed their first year in a Canadian Common Law program are eligible to apply.

Letter of Permission Applicants must submit:

  • Official law school transcripts;
  • Two letters of reference, at least one of which must be from a Law School professor;
  • A personal statement that describes personal, academic and professional reasons why the applicant wishes to study at the University of Ottawa;
  • Aletter of permissionfrom the Dean of the current law school attesting to the fact that the student is in good standing and has not been the subject of any disciplinary actions.

LSAT results are not required for Letter of Permission applicants.

Applications are to be completed online via OLSAS. The application deadline is May 1st.

Priority consideration will be given to applicants who have compelling circumstances that require their presence in Ottawa (e.g. family responsibilities, spousal relocation, financial challenges etc.)

 Files are not assessed until they are complete and all required documents have been provided. As the number of spaces available is limited, leaving your application incomplete after May 1st can prejudice the likelihood of being admitted. Files which are still incomplete as of August 1st will be cancelled without further notice.

If you would prefer to transfer to the University of Ottawa, please review our section on Transfer Applicants.

Please note: Students who have undertaken or completed their legal studies outside of Canada cannot apply to study on a  Letter of Permission.
