Biographie

Michelle Fortier est spécialiste en psychologie de l’activité physique. Elle est professeure à l’École des sciences de l’activité physique de l’Université d’Ottawa. Son programme de recherche vise à comprendre et promouvoir l’activité physique avec une emphase sur la motivation. Elle possède une vaste expérience de recherche sur les déterminants de l’activité physique dans différentes populations en santé et populations cliniques. Son dernier projet de recherche financé par le CRSH, Understanding Physical Activity Adoption and Maintenance in Cardiac Rehabilitation, s’est classé 7e au Canada. Elle est aussi cochercheuse d’une étude subventionnée par le CRSH sur les effets du mentorat par les pairs sur la qualité de vie des gens souffrant de lésions médullaires. Elle s’est grandement impliquée dans l’élaboration et l’évaluation de campagnes de promotion de l’activité physique. Son rôle de chercheuse principale du projet Counselling en activité physique (CAP : 682 677 $) lui a valu une grande notoriété. Le projet CAP était un essai randomisé contrôlé fondé sur des théories motivationnelles étudiant les effets de l’intégration d’un conseiller en activité physique ou d’un kinésiologue dans une équipe de soins primaires. Il a contribué à la création du Collège des kinésiologistes de l’Ontario. Elle a donné un cours sur le counseling en activité physique fondé sur ce projet et a plaidé pour l’institution de cours semblables partout au Canada lorsqu’elle était à la tête de la Coalition pour le counseling en activité physique. La plupart de ses recherches récentes se concentrent sur les conséquences de l’activité physique et des sports organisés sur la santé mentale. Elle est l’une des huit membres de la Commission consultative de la filiale canadienne du mouvement L’exercice : un médicament. Ses recherches ont été financées par le Conseil de recherches en sciences humaines et par l’Institut de recherche en santé du Canada. Ses écrits ont été publiés dans des revues telles que Psychology of Sport and Exercise, le Journal of Personality and Social Psychology et le Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology. Elle est membre de l’International Society of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity et de l’American College of Sport Medicine.

Recherches en cours

Un de mes projets de recherche concerne l’influence du counseling en activité physique sur l’intensité de la dépression chez les étudiantes du premier cycle. Nous étudions également les techniques de modification du comportement et d’entrevue motivationnelle des conseillères en activité physique (CAP). J’effectue une étude sur la manière dont les services de counseling en activité physique offerts sur les campus influencent les étudiants et améliorent les compétences des étudiants en kinésiologie. Je mène aussi des recherches sur les effets néfastes des sports organisés sur les enfants et les parents. Je suis cochercheuse de deux projets financés par le CRSH. L’un porte sur les effets du mentorat entre pairs sur les gens souffrant de lésions médullaires, l’autre sur les effets de la qualité des programmes sur le développement des jeunes.
