This online speaker series introduces how the empirical approach can complement traditional international law research. In today’s world where advances in information technology have led to many groundbreaking findings and innovations in various fields, international law scholars are also engaged in more empirical works, particularly big data analytics and computational researches. In this talk, the speakers will share their experiences working in cross-disciplinary settings between traditional and empirical legal researches  — how can law work with big data?

  • Ashley S. Deeks
    The E. James Kelly, Jr.-Class of 1965 Research Professor and the Director of the National Security Law Center at the University of Virginia Law School.  Her primary research and teaching interests are international law, national security, intelligence, the laws of war, executive power, and new technologies.  She serves on the State Department’s Advisory Committee on International Law and the Boards of Editors for the American Journal of International Law and the Journal of National Security Law and Policy.  She is a senior fellow at UVA’s Miller Center and at Lieber Institute for Law and Land Warfare at West Point, as well as a senior contributor to Lawfare.  Before joining UVA, Deeks served for ten years in the U.S. State Department’s Office of the Legal Adviser, including as the assistant legal adviser for political-military affairs and the legal adviser to U.S. Embassy Baghdad.
  • Huaxia Lai
    An Assistant Professor at Peking University School of International Studies. Trained in both international law and political science, she specializes in international economic law, international organizations, and the linkages between law and politics in international relations. She received her degrees from the University of Washington and Peking University.
  • Malcolm Langford
    A Professor of Public Law, University of Oslo and Director of the Centre on Experiential Legal Learning (CELL), a Centre of Excellence in Education (SFU). He has published widely in investment law and empirical legal studies and his latest publication is ‘Computational stylometry: predicting the authorship of investment treaty awards’. Malcolm is Chairperson of the Academic Forum for Investor-State Dispute Settlement (ISDS), Co-Editor of the Cambridge University Book Series on Globalization and Human Rights, and Coordinator of the Digital Lawyer, University of Oslo. He has won the John Jackson Prize for Best Article in the Journal of International Economic Law for the paper Revolving Door in International Investment Arbitration; and European Society of International Law Young Scholar Prize for the paper Managing Backlash: The Evolving Investment Arbitrator.
  • Joost Pauwelyn
    A Professor of International Law at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, Switzerland and Co-Director of the Institute’s Centre for Trade and Economic Integration (CTEI). He is also the Murase Visiting Professor of Law at Georgetown University Law Center (since 2014).  Previously he was Professor of Law at Duke University (2002-2007). He has also taught at Neuchâtel, Columbia, NYU, Stanford and Harvard law schools and worked as legal adviser for the WTO Secretariat (1996-2002).  From 2007 to 2014, he was Senior Advisor with the law firm of King & Spalding.  Joost specializes in international economic law, in particular trade law and investment law, and its relationship to public international law. He also frequently advises governments and industry in WTO dispute settlement and investment arbitration and is a leading force behind the global www.tradelab.org network of legal clinics on international economic law. Joost is the Co-Editor in Chief of the Journal of International Economic Law.
