The division and its members promote education, including the residency training programs in Geriatric Psychiatry, Psychiatry Residency, Geriatric Medicine, Family Medicine, Care of the Elderly Program and the undergraduate training program at the University of Ottawa's Faculty of Medicine. Supervision, provided in both official languages, involves small and large group teaching. Supervision and education are enhanced through the coordination of those in leadership positions and committees. The division also puts an emphasis on training allied health professionals, including those in rural areas. Several of our members are also involved in leadership or working group positions at the Faculty of Medicine, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and the Medical Council of Canada.  Division members are involved in leadership and advocacy at the Canadian Psychiatry Association (CPA), CAGP, and the International Psychogeriatric Association.

The Department of Psychiatry at the University of Ottawa is pleased to offer a subspecialty training program that has been accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

Application process:

The Geriatric Psychiatry Residency Training Program has the capacity to accommodate up to three PGY-6 residents:

For candidates applying to PGY6, you must have completed PGY4 by the end of December of the year you are applying.

• Up to one funded position through the Post-graduate medical education office; will depend on availability of this funding
• The balance where alternate sources of funding are available and arranged by the applicant and deemed acceptable by the Faculty of Medicine

Applicants will be applying to this program for their PGY-5 and/or PGY-6 training years. We welcome applicants from other universities.

One year of eligible rotations should be completed during PGY-4 and/or PGY-5 in a recognized Psychiatry Residency program in Canada and the resident must be eligible to write the RCPSC (Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada) examination in general psychiatry at the end of their PGY-5 year.
