In the final years of psychiatry training, residents are invited to tailor their training by choosing electives that will prepare them to transition into their careers.

The goal is to consolidate skills, learn to take a leadership role or to focus on specific areas of interest. Up to six months of electives at other training centres across North America can be arranged.

Within Ottawa teaching hospitals, examples of elective rotations are:

  • Psychotherapy
  • Psychopharmacology
  • Forensics
  • Child and Adolescent psychiatry
  • Emergency psychiatry
  • Perinatal health
  • Addictions
  • Transcultural psychiatry
  • Geriatric Psychiatry
  • Transition age group
  • Dual Diagnosis
  • Palliative care
  • Psychiatry Outreach
  • Adult eating disorders
  • Sleep disorders
  • Schizophrenia
  • Electroconvulsive therapy
  • Adult day treatment program
