Meet Sarah

What was your last career change?

Since I arrived in Canada, I have worked as a Graphic Designer and Web Developer in a private company specializing in smart buildings. It was a very rich learning experience where I was able to develop several skills, which led me to join uOttawa as a Web Developer.

What made it successful?

There is no magic recipe for success. It is built by perseverance, dedication, and commitment. However, your work environment contributes a great deal to making the path easier. My team and I work together in total synergy to meet the objectives set for us, and I believe this is what success is.

What was the biggest challenge in adapting to your new role?

In each new experience, there is always an adaptation phase to become familiar with the new work environment, including people and processes. Once you get to know where you are standing, everything becomes smooth. We are constantly learning while challenges surfaces, but the will to develop is essential in making it a constructive experience. The University’s management team’s awareness of this need is accounted for and they have made the necessary training available to meet operational needs.

What advice would you give to someone considering a career change?

You must realize your needs and meet your passion first. By doing so you will immediately step out of your comfort zone.  For anyone considering a career change, I would advise setting a professional goal and taking a step back to walk two steps forward. It is never too late for that.

How can colleagues help someone transition into their new responsibilities?

Colleagues are the pillars of the team. A caring team will take care of any new member and do whatever is necessary to make the person feel included. Knowledge transfer is not limited, it can be sharing experiences, past mistakes, and updates on how things were and now became- it helps the person feel fully included.

What do you look forward to in your day?

Every day, I set myself goals to finish; there is nothing more satisfying than putting a check box on a task in progress. However, while meeting deadlines, delivering work that is of quality comes first to me, quantity can wait.

If you were a chocolate bar, which one would you be?

A crunchy, melting, and crispy Ferrero Rocher.

What ingredient should never be found on a pizza?

You can put any ingredient on a pizza as long as it's delicious!

What three items would you bring if you were shipped to a deserted island?

  1. A tent
  2. A lighter
  3. And a fishing net
