Meet Yoo Young Lee

What is your job title?

Head of Information Technology at the Library

How do you see your role going forward?

In IT at the Library, there have been discussions about investing in open infrastructure and development of open-source technologies for teaching, learning, and research, which is one of the University’s critical missions. I would like to collaborate with other IT teams to provide a direction and foster conversations in this area.

Where did you complete your studies?

I completed my first Bachelor of Arts in Sociology at Ewha Womans University in Korea. I also obtained my second degree, a Bachelor of Commerce in Management Information Systems, at Concordia University in Montréal. Additionally, I hold a Master’s of Library and Information Studies from McGill University.

In which countries have you lived or which ones have you visited?

I have lived in Korea, the United States, and Canada. I love to travel and the last country I visited before the pandemic was Russia. I’ve visited Mexico, Venezuela, Finland, Sweden, Estonia, Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro, Switzerland, France, Monaco, Spain, the United Kingdom, South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, China, Japan, Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. I am really looking forward to the after-pandemic era!

What is your guilty indulgence?

Watching K-pop idols’ video clips on YouTube. It changes all the time, but these days, I am so obsessed with “Winner”!

If you could snap your fingers and become an expert in something, what would it be?

If I had that magic, I would really want to have good makeup skills and a sense of fashion style!

What are you learning now, and why is it important?

I started learning how to play golf this summer. For my family it is extremely important, but I have refused to learn until now. My parents are crazy about it; my brother used to be a professional golf player. In addition, my close friends started playing so I felt that it was time to pick it up.

Related to work, I am learning SCCM, System Center Configuration Management, via CBTNuggets which is a virtual platform for IT pros to access a variety of training services. In fact, Iwould like to learn more to follow up with the campus-wide initiative!

What’s your favourite sport to watch and which team do you root for?

My favourite sport to watch is rhythmic gymnastics, especially at the Olympic level. I cheer for twin sisters—Dina Averina and Arina Averina—from Russia.

Current projects

The Library IT team is currently working on the modernization of IT practices with other IT teams on campus (e.g., assets inventory management, domain migrations, etc.) and clearing up backlogs in various applications (e.g., DSpace for institutional repository) to better meet users’ requirements.
