Bonjour à toutes et à tous. Good morning.

Merci beaucoup.

I am honoured to be named the 30th President and Vice-Chancellor of this august institution.

The University of Ottawa is renowned throughout Canada and around the world as a powerhouse of knowledge. It is home to game-changing ideas, like here in this building, the state-of-the-art Advanced Research Complex. For example, over here on my left is the accelerator mass spectrometer that enables scientists to conduct the most advanced environmental research in the world and unlock important mysteries about natural resources, climate and health.

I must admit that with my background in constitutional law and academia, I was also attracted to the University of Ottawa because of its long and harmonious history of combining both Francophone and Anglophone cultures. The University has been committed to this unique dual culture environment since its founding in 1848 by Mgr Joseph-Eugène-Bruno Guigues. It was his dream to bring together Francophones and Anglophones to study in the same classroom, both in French and English.

Obviously, bilingualism and biculturalism create a very special environment: one that encourages excellence, understanding and creativity in our students, faculty, employees and alumni.

As I stand here on this campus today, I feel the presence of previous leaders and their passion for this extraordinary University and its mission.

I look forward to taking up the torch. I will count on the contributions of our faculty, students and support staff to keep this wonderful momentum going as we keep defying the conventional. Nous avons beaucoup de travail devant nous!
