Welcome to the neighborhood! As a new academic year begins, Action Sandy Hill (ASH) extends a warm welcome to all students at the University of Ottawa.
Established in 1969, ASH is a group of dedicated volunteers committed to making a positive impact in the neighborhood in which the University of Ottawa is located. Our mission is simple yet powerful: to represent and promote the interests of all Sandy Hill residents. We believe in fostering connections, engaging in conversations, and collectively enhancing the neighborhood we all share. We care about building a diverse, historic, and green community within a vibrant neighbourhood that welcomes people from all walks of life.
From Campus to Community: Let’s eat, meet and greet!
We hope to see you at the first-ever Sandy Hill Food Truck Festival on September 16, from noon to 7 p.m. on Osgoode Street between Henderson and Chapel. It will take place on the same day as our Sandy Hill Community Garage Sale, which will run from 8 a.m. to noon. Get to know the neighbourhood as you do some thrifting and enjoy a variety of food, music and community vibes.
Connecting the threads: Town and Gown
One of the ways in which ASH maintains active communication with students and the University’s administration is via the Sandy Hill Town and Gown Committee. This initiative aims to strengthen the link between uOttawa and the wider community. The committee provides a forum for discussing common concerns and issues, and for reaching solutions to build a harmonious neighborhood where everyone thrives.
The University of Ottawa Students’ Union (UOSU) and the Graduate Student’s Association des étudiant.es diplômé.es (GSEAD) represent the student perspective on the Town and Gown Committee, alongside representatives from the community, the Ward councillor, City of Ottawa officials, property owner representatives and others.
Your space in the community
As a uOttawa student, your presence adds vibrancy to our tapestry. Residents of this neighborhood include fellow uOttawa students, alumni, faculty members and administrators. Some longer-term residents first arrived in the city and the neighborhood exactly like you: to pursue their education. In the process, however, they discovered what we believe to be one of the best neighborhoods in the city.
We encourage you to view your journey at uOttawa as more than just academics and campus life – it's also an opportunity for you to become involved in broader issues with people from all walks of life. In addition to hosting events, we employ dedicated volunteers who seek to make a difference, at the local level, on environmental and social issues, active transportation, and housing.
