Some students shine quietly — not through loud declarations, but through presence, resilience, and the way they make others feel seen. Laurie Rochon, who graduates with an Honours BA in Psychology and a GPA of 9.23, is one of those students. Her journey at the University of Ottawa reflects not only academic dedication but a deep emotional intelligence and a commitment to growing as both a scholar and a human being.

Laurie chose psychology out of a desire to help people — especially those navigating vulnerability, uncertainty, or pain. Her studies gave her the tools to listen more deeply, understand more clearly, and build meaningful connections.

One of the most formative experiences of her degree came through a field research course in Morocco, where she studied unaccompanied minors and migration. That journey opened her eyes to the complex realities behind the numbers — and solidified her resolve to work in service of youth and families in need.

Laurie’s academic record is impressive, but it tells only part of the story. Throughout her degree, she balanced two jobs, a volunteer role on a crisis line, her honours thesis, and preparations for a humanitarian trip to the Dominican Republic — all while protecting her mental health.

She doesn’t glorify burnout. Instead, Laurie champions something rarer: sustainable excellence. Her path is a reminder that success isn’t about doing everything — it’s about doing what matters, with care and alignment.

Laurie’s professors often describe her as someone who brings both warmth and clarity to any space she’s in. Whether participating in class discussions or speaking at a public health event on youth substance use, she communicates with thoughtfulness, presence, and quiet confidence.

She leads not by taking up space — but by inviting others in.

Her advice to future students: “Choose a field that genuinely excites you — it will carry you through the tough seasons. And don’t let the pressure to perform overshadow your well-being. There’s strength in choosing balance.”

Her personal mantra: “No hay problemas, solo soluciones.”.Learned during a humanitarian trip: “There are no problems, only solutions.” A mindset that continues to shape how she approaches life and learning.
