Creating Opportunities through Co-op (DCO3O) is a unique course that provides a Grade 11 credit. The course blends work experience, leadership development and exposure to a university setting. Developed by the award-winning Outreach team, the program equips students with the tools they need to succeed, whether they plan to pursue science, technology, engineering or math (STEM); business; education; or another path altogether.
At the core of the program is a meaningful on-campus internship in STEM for high school students. After completing modules focused on health and safety, communication and workplace readiness, students are matched with a placement through a formal interview process. Most will join the Faculty’s celebrated Engineering Outreach programs, helping to deliver summer STEM camps and hands-on learning experiences for children across the region.
During their co-op placement, students may:
- Support robotics or coding workshops,
- Guide STEM campers through science-based activities,
- Assist instructors with STEM challenges and activities,
- Co-lead sessions that spark curiosity and confidence in younger learners.
“Just like our Computer Technology course launched last fall, this new co-op course reflects our commitment to staying ahead of the curve,” says Julie Olivier, Principal of the Faculty of Engineering Secondary School. “We’re not just preparing students for post-secondary—we’re immersing them in it early.”
The Faculty of Engineering Secondary School has earned a reputation for reimagining traditional high school education. With access to cutting-edge technology, experienced educators and university-level learning environments, students are encouraged to explore, ask questions and create. DCO3O builds on this by offering students authentic opportunities to build confidence, develop leadership skills and gain hands-on experience — in a real workplace setting.
“This new co-op experience brings learning to life,” adds Olivier. “It helps students connect classroom knowledge with the real world and offers them a sense of ownership in their learning journey. That kind of engagement is transformative.”
This course also emphasizes workplace safety and mental well-being, setting students up to know not only how to work but also how to thrive in a job.
The Faculty of Engineering is one of Canada’s leading voices in youth STEM education. From hosting national competitions to launching new high school courses rooted in tech and innovation, the Faculty continues to open doors for students to see themselves pursuing future-focused careers. This new summer co-op course for high school students makes that pathway even more real.
Whether teens are thinking about a future in engineering or simply looking for a meaningful way to grow their skills and confidence this summer, Creating Opportunities through Co-op offers them an unmatched opportunity to learn, grow and lead in a high-support, high-impact environment.
