Main program policies for Formation à l’enseignement.

Professional training

Formation à l’enseignement is your professional training. This means that you are already considered future professionals. You'll have responsibilities, deadlines to meet, activities to carry out and a professional code of ethics to respect.
 

Language skills

Language proficiency is an important requirement of the program. Since the French language is an essential teaching and communication tool, it must be mastered by teachers. How we can help:

  • Faculty members will pay particular attention to the quality of oral and written language;
  • Language quality will be part of every course evaluation. Please consult your course syllabus.

Knowledge and skills development 

The program is designed to develop skills and knowledge in a variety of fields. Students must master the content in order to be able to teach it. They must also master the technological tools needed to access and apply this knowledge. Over the course of their training program, students must develop teaching skills and strategies that foster optimal student development.

Personal work

According to University of Ottawa Academic Regulation 8, a credit is the numerical value assigned to an academic activity. One credit generally corresponds to 45 hours of work, including, where applicable, attendance in class (lectures, labs, practical training) or online, personal work, practical or other assignments, and exam preparation.

Assignments

Assignments must be handed in on time, according to the professor's instructions and the schedule set out in the course syllabus. In the event of late submission, prior agreement must be reached with the teacher specifying the date on which the work is to be handed in. If, for exceptional reasons, you wish to obtain an extension, you must complete the deferred grade request form and send it to your teacher.
 

Attendance and punctuality

Faculty regulations on professional ethics include attendance and punctuality. If you are absent from a class without a serious reason and without supporting evidence, or if you are late for class or leave early, your internship may be postponed until you have demonstrated your ability to meet attendance and punctuality standards. It is also possible that these individuals will not be able to receive their university degree, and that their file will not be recommended to the Ontario College of Teachers for the Certificate of Qualification and Registration.

Substitution

The Faculty of Education prohibits students enrolled in the regular teacher training program from substituting or holding any other position in a school during class days, mandatory training sessions and teaching internships. While there is no law or regulation preventing students of Formation à l'enseignement from substituting before or after their practicum, it's best to avoid it because of the risks it may entail for your future career.

Students of Formation à l’enseignement - alternative mode 

If you obtain a Transitional Certificate of Qualification and Registration from the Ontario College of Teachers, you may be hired as a qualified teacher by a French-language school board in one of the divisions for which you are training. You'll be able to do one of your practicums in your own classroom and continue to be paid. Since the Alternative Program offers qualification in the Primary and Junior divisions, you won't be able to do an internship in the Intermediate or Senior divisions, even if you hold a Transitional Certificate.

Intellectual integrity
