Simon Coakeley, LLB ’83 and LLM ’93, Named CEO of the Canadian Bar Association
Simon Coakeley, LLB ’83 and LLM ’93, former federal government executive, becomes the new CEO of the Canadian Bar Association on February 15, 2021.

Coakeley’s career includes over 25 years at the senior levels of the federal government, 14 years as an assistant deputy minister and later as executive director and executive lead for refugee reform implementation at the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada, to only name two. He is currently CEO of the non-profit National Association of Federal Retirees.

His fluency in both official languages and his in-depth expertise in human resources management will be great assets in his new role.

“As a lawyer, I have long admired the work of the Canadian Bar Association and am thrilled to be joining the CBA at this point in my career,” said Mr. Coakeley.

He received his B.A. ‘80, LLB ’83 (Common Law French Program) and LLM ’93, from the University of Ottawa, and is a member of the Law Society of Ontario.

The Canadian Bar Association is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to upholding the rule of law, and improvements both in the law, and the administration of justice. Some 36,000 lawyers, notaries in Quebec, law teachers and law students from across Canada, are members.
