The Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine at the University of Ottawa is recruiting faculty to join our team of committed academic physicians.  Current available faculty positions at the lecturer, assistant, associate, or full professor rank offer a broad scope of clinical practice with unrivalled support for faculty development and mentorship in the beautiful capital city of Ottawa, Canada.

We have Canada’s third-largest anesthesiology residency program and have a history of excellence in medical education.  In 2015, we implemented the first Competence By Design anesthesiology residency program in Canada, two years ahead of the national cohort.  Our simulation-based curriculum is one of the most extensive in the country and is one of the strengths of our residency program.  We are proud to offer postgraduate residency programs in Anesthesiology and in Pain Medicine, as well as Fellowship programs in thirteen subspecialty areas.  With an outstanding group of physician teachers and educators dedicated to providing exceptional and innovative medical education, we support our faculty in delivering a multitude of educational initiatives geared toward undergraduate, postgraduate, and continuing education.

The Ottawa Hospital

The Ottawa Hospital (TOH) is one of Canada’s top learning and research hospitals, where excellent care is inspired by research and driven by compassion.  As the third-largest employer in Ottawa, our multi-campus hospital, affiliated with the University of Ottawa, attracts some of the most influential scientific minds from around the world.  We are the Regional Trauma Centre for Eastern Ontario and have been accredited with Exemplary Standing for health-care delivery — the highest rating from Accreditation Canada.

The Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine at TOH comprises anesthesiologists, as well as palliative care specialists, psychologists, addiction specialists, hyperbaric medicine specialists, pain nurses, anesthesia assistants and other health care professionals.

  • In the Pain Clinic, we collaborate with colleagues in Palliative Care, Emergency Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and Neurosurgery in the interdisciplinary care of patients suffering with pain.

  • Highlights of our clinical practice profile include providing anesthesia for novel procedures like robotic thoracic surgery, awake craniotomies, and functional epilepsy neurosurgery.

  • We run several innovative subspeciality programs including POCUS / TEE for non-cardiac surgery, Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS), and Virtual Recovery After Surgery (VRAS).

  • We were one of the first institutions in Canada to offer an ambulatory nerve block catheter program and provide coverage of this service for all three campuses of The Ottawa Hospital, offering regional blocks for post-operative pain, trauma, ERAS, and complex pain pathologies.

At TOH, our department’s research programs are focused on three core areas — perioperative medicine, medical education, and pain medicine.  Our researchers use methods that enable us to affect care from the cellular level to entire populations.  This research is funded by competitive grants that we regularly receive from federal sources (e.g. Canadian Institutes of Health Research).
