Biography

Dr. Wilkins is a graduate of the University of Western Ontario where he received his MD in 1982. From there he moved to The University of Ottawa for his Psychiatry residency (1983-1987), followed by a Fellowship in Consultation Liaison Psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego in 1988-1989. He joined the staff at the Royal Ottawa Hospital in 1989 where he was a staff psychiatrist in Addiction Services until 1991.

Dr. Wilkins joined the Department of Psychiatry at the Ottawa Civic Hospital as an Associate Staff member in June 1991 where he was also responsible for the Department’s Consultation-Liaison Service, Emergency Service and Undergraduate Education Program. In May of 1993, he became Acting Chief of the Department, a position he held until March 1995 at which time he was appointed Chief of the Department.

Dr. Wilkins was Chief of the Department of Psychiatry until the formation of The Ottawa Hospital in 1998 when he became Deputy Head of the Department of Psychiatry and Director of Psychiatry Emergency & Crisis Services at The Ottawa Hospital.

In January 2002, he accepted the position of Chief of Psychiatry at the Queensway-Carleton Hospital, a position he held for three years before returning to The Ottawa Hospital.

He has been active in the Ontario Psychiatric Association and was president of this organization in 2004.

Dr. Wilkins is currently working at the Civic Campus of the Ottawa Hospital, where he has a variety of clinical duties, including Emergency, Inpatient and Consultation-Liaison psychiatry.

Dr. Wilkins is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry, University of Ottawa and is actively involved in teaching medical students and residents. He has received several awards for Best Clinical Supervisor as selected by the residents in the University of Ottawa’s Department of Psychiatry.
