The annual Canadian Student Health Research Forum (CSHRF) provides unique opportunities to showcase and recognize Canada's most promising research trainees in the health sciences. Universities and research institutes nominate their top PhD students in health research for participation in an oral (research poster) presentation which is judged by experts in the field including, Gairdner laureates. This year the Forum was a virtual affair due to COVID measures and participants were invited to provide a video presentation of their research to be judged. Congratulations to Terry Suk who won the Gold Award for his outstanding research presentation entitled: “Characterizing the Relationship Between SUMOylation and TDP-43 in the context of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis”. Terry is carrying out his doctoral studies in CMM under the supervision of Dr. Maxime Rousseaux.
“The CSHRF was a standout event for my graduate studies. It was exciting to learn about all the diverse research taking place across Canada by so many bright and passionate students. Additionally, having the opportunity to sit down and chat with Gairdner Laureates was nothing short of inspirational. These discussions have really motivated me for my career as a scientist and I hope everybody gets such an opportunity during their studies!” said Terry.
Congratulations to Alyssa Pastic who won the Silver Award for her outstanding research presentation entitled: “Investigating the role of condensin-mediated chromosome morphogenesis during mitosis”. Alyssa is carrying out her doctoral studies in CMM in Dr. Damien D’Amours’ laboratory.
“It was my first time attending a virtual conference and it was a great experience!” said Alyssa
“The fact that our graduate students are competing and winning top honours at a national level speaks volumes about the research programs in CMM. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone in CMM for their contributions in making this a high-level research/training environment,” comments Professor Tuana.
