Eligibility
To be admissible, the nominee must hold a full-time tenured or tenure-track position at the Faculty. At the time of nomination, the nominee must have completed at least two years, but no more than seven years as a full-time professor.
Nomination Process
An application must include the following elements:
- A two- to four-page statement by the nominee describing his or her field of research and explaining his or her most important contributions to research (up to a maximum of five contributions).
- A CV
- A confidential letter of recommendation supporting the application. This letter should come from experts in the field of competence of the nominee who is not in conflict of interest (see below for an explanation). A letter from the University of Ottawa will not be accepted.
- The Letter should focus, among other things, on the quality of the candidate’s publications based on his career stage as well as his contributions to the field or discipline.
- The author must indicate that there is no conflict of interest and that if he or she knows the candidate, under what circumstances and for how long.
- The author should explain his or her ability to provide an objective assessment of the candidate’s accomplishments.
- The letter should be addressed to the Vice-Dean, Research and Professional Development, signed, printed on letterhead and sent directly by the author by e-mail to [email protected] by March 15.
- A confidential letter from the candidate’s Director describing his or her contributions to the intellectual life and the development of the unit and the Faculty. The confidential letter, signed and written on letterhead is sent directly by the Director by email to [email protected] by March 15.
- We encourage members of groups that are underrepresented in research to submit their candidacy and to self-identify according to their group or groups (women, Indigenous persons, racialized persons, persons living with a disability, members of the LGBTQi2S+ community) if you are comfortable doing so. As measure of equity, in the event of a tie between multiple applications, priority will be given to members of a group that is under-represented.
Conflict of Interest
A conflict of interest may be deemed to exist or perceived as such when the expert:
- is affiliated with the nominee’s institution;
- has a personal link with the nominee (including, being a friend, parent, supervisor or student under his/her supervision);
- has collaborated, published or shared funding with the nominee, in the last 7 years.
Deadline
March 15 of every year.
If no candidates are submitted, the Dean and Vice-Deans will propose nominations.

Selection Process
The Selection Committee is chaired by the Vice-Dean, Research and Professional Development, and composed of the members of the Faculty’s Research Committee.
Selection Criteria
- quality of publications according to career stage
- contributions to the field or discipline
- contributions to knowledge mobilization
- contributions to the intellectual life and the development of the unit and the Faculty
- supervision of graduate students
- unique characteristics of research
Award
At the Dean's Brunch, the recipient will receive a commemorative plaque as well as a research assistantship and the amount of $2,500 in research funding.
