Over the course of 2019, a large number of distinguished economists have passed through the University of Ottawa's economics department to give seminars or participate in workshops. Here's a quick summary of the year's events, featuring more than fifty visiting economists from around the globe.
Our Canada and the World seminar series this year invited Nathan Nunn of Harvard in March both to present an academic seminar and to make a keynote speech at our annual alumni lunch. In April, the series presented a seminar by Devin Pope (Chicago). A one-day workshop on health economics was held in June, featuring Andrew Jones of the University of York, UK, along with Anand Acharya (Carleton), Pierre-Carl Michaud (HEC Montréal) and Tuba Tunçel (HEC Montréal).
The new Marleau Lecture Series on Economic and Monetary Policy, funded by a generous contribution by Hubert Marleau, began with visits by Regis Barnichon (San Francisco Fed) in May and James Morley (Sydney) in September. Then, in December, the University of Ottawa Symposium on Economic Policy featured the Marleau Signature Lecture by former IMF chief economist Olivier Blanchard. This event along included an academic panel session with Hafedh Bouakez (HEC Montréal), Amy Hongfei Sun (Queen's) and Sarah Zubairy (Texas A&M), and a policy panel involving the chief economist of the Chamber of Commerce, Trevin Stratton, as well as our own emeritus professor Serge Coulombe.
The Ottawa-Carleton Graduate School of Economics funded a visit by the eminent MIT economist Joshua Angrist in August, along with seminar visits by Pierre Thomas Léger (Illinois-Chicago) in March, Koichiro Ito (Chicago) and Pierre-Carl Michaud (HEC Montréal) in April, and Bernard Fortin (Laval) in November.
The Ottawa Applied Microeconomics Lab organized a workshop on women's economic empowerment in September, with Siwan Anderson (UBC), Raquel Fernandez (NYU), Erica Field (Duke), Sara Hernandez (Northwestern), Sonia Laszlo (McGill), Sahar Parsa (NYU), Na'ama Shenhav (Dartmouth) and Clementine Van Effenterre (Toronto). This event was funded by the Alex Trebek Forum for Dialogue. Earlier in the year (in April), the group also held a workshop on the political economy of development, with Ray Fisman (Boston), Jonas Hjort (Columbia), Ruixue Jia (UCSD), Stelios Michalopoulos (Brown) and Yanos Zylberberg (Bristol).
In October, the 2019 Ottawa Microeconomic Theory Workshop included talks by Samson Alva (UT San Antonio), Umut Dur (North Carolina State), Lars Ehlers (Montréal), Guillaume Haeringer (Baruch College), Sean Horan (Montréal), Ruben Juarez (Hawaii), Thayer Morrill (North Carolina State), Szilvia Pápai (Concordia), Yuki Tamura (Rochester), William Thomson (Rochester), Peter Troyan (Virginia), Norovsambuu Tumennasan (Dalhousie) and Bumin Yenmez (Boston College), as well as our own Roland Pongou. Morrill and Juarez also presented seminars to the department.
The deputy governor of the Bank of Canada, Lawrence Schembri, visited our department in November to give a talk on inflation targeting.
Finally, the department's regular seminar series also included visits in 2019 by Stefan Ambec (Toulouse), Decio Coviello (HEC Montréal), Martin Fiszbein (Boston), Mohsen Javdani (UBC Okanagan), Juan Moreno-Cruz (Waterloo), Alberto Salvo (Singapore), Nicholas Sanders (Cornell) and Nicolas Ziebarth (Cornell).
