Elif “Nur” Kumru
Biography
Elif “Nur” Kumru is a PhD in Law candidate at the University of Ottawa Centre for Law, Technology and Society, under the supervision of Dr. Teresa Scassa.
Nur Kumru’s research aims to create a regulatory framework that focuses on privacy to address the systemic harms of artificial intelligence (AI) systems.
In 2019, Nur Kumru graduated from the LLM program at Duke University School of Law, where she focused on Cybersecurity, Data Protection, and Privacy. After completing her LLM, she was a Graduate Fellow at the Duke Center on Law & Tech (DCLT), where she conducted research for and helped write a chapter on the Privacy Implications of AI Systems for a textbook on Law & AI. Her research made her realize that current privacy protections that focus on personally identifiable information and notice & consent are no longer effective in protecting against the systemic harms of Big Data fuelled AI systems. This motivated her to pursue a PhD to create a regulatory framework that focuses on privacy to address the systemic harms of AI Systems.
