During winter 2022, Tonatiuh Martínez, Ph.D. student in Political and Social Sciences at the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), visited our Centre to learn about the development of public policies affecting the indigenous population and First Nations in Canada.

His research project was entitled The axiology of public policies. The case of public policies for the attention of the indigenous population, and the case studies he focusses were the Mexican indigenous policy of the six-year term of Presidents Vicente Fox Quezada (2000-2006) and Andrés López Obrador (2018-2024).

As part of the research project, he developed the Axiological Model of Public Policy, which is a methodological tool for the elaboration, design, and analysis of public policies. This tool allows the researchers to know, prioritize, and establish the relationship between the values contained in public policies, their makers, and beneficiaries. Taking into account that the Government of Canada has implemented public policies for the indigenous population and First Nations, which are a reference for Latin America, Mr. Martinez analyzed the values of indigenous public policies in Canada and conducted interviews with Canadian participants. This visit was possible thanks to the support of the National Program of Quality Graduate Studies of the National Council of Science and Technology (CONACyT).
