Carlos is originally from Cuba. He is a researcher in the fields of literature, political philosophy, and human rights. He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Economics from the University of Havana and a Diploma in Humanism and Society from the Alberto Hurtado University. He also holds an MBA from the Catholic University of San Antonio de Murcia and a Master's in Advanced Studies in Spanish and Hispano-American Literature from the University of Barcelona. Currently, Carlos is pursuing a Ph.D. in Spanish at the University of Ottawa, where his research focuses on Cuban literature that explores totalitarian phenomena and human rights violations. Since April 2022, he has been working on the HRREC Human Rights Clinic Project Scholars at Risk (SAR) in the Americas to monitor cases of attacks on academic freedom in Canada, Bolivia, and Cuba.
