Biography
Korina Jocson, Ph.D., is Associate Professor of Education at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Central to her research are arts-informed sociocultural approaches for examining the ways in which young people engage in different modes of expression in their lives. Examples include writing and media production (broadly construed) not only as representations of everyday literacies but also as forms of critical engagement. She primarily draws on qualitative inquiry and works directly with teachers, students, youth advocates, and other partners in education.
Dr. Jocson is the author of Youth Poets: Empowering Literacies In and Out of Schools (Peter Lang, 2008) and Youth Media Matters: Participatory Cultures and Literacies in Education (University of Minnesota, exp. 2017). She is also the editor of Cultural Transformations: Youth and Pedagogies of Possibility (Harvard Education Press, 2013). Other publications have appeared in scholarly journals such as International Journal of Qualitative Studies in Education, Anthropology and Education Quarterly, Curriculum Inquiry, Teachers College Record, and Daedalus. She earned her Ph.D. in Education at the University of California, Berkeley, and completed a postdoctoral research fellowship at Stanford University School of Education.
