The Centre for Law, Technology and Society is delighted to announce that Faculty member Dr.Wolfgang Alschner has been appointed as the Hyman Soloway Chair in Business and Trade Law.

The Hyman Soloway Chair in Business and Trade Law is named after the late Mr. Hyman Soloway, Q.C., a long-time senior partner in the law firm of Soloway Wright. The Chair seeks to provide opportunities for students, professors, alumni and the international law community to engage, learn and be inspired by leading experts in the field through clerkships (at venues such as the International Court of Justice), membership and sponsorship of international law organizations (such as the Canadian Council on International Law), conferences, workshops, speakers, communications and other activities.  

Dr. Wolfgang Alschner is a Faculty member at the Centre for Law, Technology and Society, and an Associate Professor within the Faculty of Law, Common Law Section at the University of Ottawa, with cross-appointment to the Faculty of Engineering, School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. An empirical legal scholar specialized in international economic law and the computational analysis of law, he heads the uOttawa Legal Technology Lab, an interdisciplinary collaboration between the Faculties of Law and Engineering, funded by Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI), to conduct legal technology research and implement legal technology solutions at the University of Ottawa.  

Prior to joining the University of Ottawa, Dr. Alschner worked for several years as an individual contractor for UNCTAD’s Section on International Investment Agreements and as a research fellow at the Graduate Institute in Geneva and the World Trade Institute in Bern, Switzerland. He is co-founder of the investment treaty analytics portal www.mappinginvestmenttreaties.com and has published in leading peer-reviewed journals such as the Yale Journal of International Law, the European Journal of International Law and the Journal of International Economic Law. He also created the educational resource Data Science for Lawyers to help lawyers master the skills of computer and data scientists. His research focuses on using social and computer science methods in order to empirically investigate international law. His areas of interest include international investment law and arbitration, WTO law, regional trade agreements, international dispute settlement, law & economics and empirical analysis of law.
