What is your role working in Information Technology?
I work at the Service Desk at the University of Ottawa. The Service Desk is dedicated to fostering innovation and transformation through collaboration, leadership, and advanced technology. Guided by a vision of digital ambition, it aims to optimize the value of technological investments, enhance organizational efficiency, and shape the future of work, study, and learning.
What degree are you currently pursuing?
Honours Bachelor of Commerce, specialized in Management.
What did people in your group do to help you integrate into the group and help get you started on the activities assigned to you?
They provided extensive support through knowledge sharing, offering additional responsibilities, and training on new technologies and systems.
What are your main responsibilities in your position in Information Technology?
Offering on-site assistance for the university’s computing systems to students and employees.
Manage inventory accounting and billing while ensuring IT inventory accuracy and overseeing the allocation of assets within the database.
Diagnose and resolve application software and operating system issues while configuring, troubleshooting, and supporting desktops, laptops, and mobile devices.
What do you like about your job in this work term?
I enjoy engaging with our customers and making a meaningful impact on their experience. The opportunity to drive innovation, discover new solutions, and deliver the best possible service while representing the University of Ottawa is truly rewarding.
What skillsets have you developed since working in Information Technology?
I continuously develop my problem-solving, customer service, and teamwork skills through daily practice while working at the office.
Why did you apply for this position in Information Technology?
Technology and innovation have always fascinated me. I had the unique opportunity to engage with these interests while also representing my university—an experience that few can claim.
What was your biggest challenge in your first few weeks? How did you overcome it?
My main challenge was adapting to new changes, such as equipment preparation methods and understanding SCCM. By asking questions and working hands-on with SCCM, I gained a better understanding of its processes and how it prepares our laptops.
Do you feel as though you are using what you have learned so far in your university courses in the workplace?
Studying management while working in a technology-driven environment allows me to apply management theories, customer service strategies, and optimization concepts to my workplace. I contribute by helping my team work more efficiently and sharing ideas that make our services both sustainable and essential for our clients.
What is one thing you have learned about yourself while working in Information Technology?
One thing I’ve learned about myself while working in Information Technology is the importance of sustainability and teamwork in our daily operations. Collaboration is essential within a team, and effective communication—whether with my peers or customers—is a skill that I value and will carry with me throughout my career.
