Going forward with Mobile Application Management (MAM)

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, most of the University’s workforce has been working remotely. The use of both University-issued and personal (BYOD) mobile devices to connect to University resources and services has increased.

To manage the security risks associated with these devices and protect institutional resources, the Mobile Application Management (MAM) project was initiated to rollout Microsoft Intune.

What is MAM?

The Mobile Application Management (MAM) is a cloud-based service that relies on Microsoft Intune to ensure that regardless of the type of device ownership, the basic security requirements for accessing data, information and resources are implemented.

Who will be impacted?

The Intune MAM will include mobile phones and tablets for both academic and support staff that are used to access University’s resources and data. Computers and other device types are not currently included as part of this initiative.

The policies are applied differently depending on the device type (University-owned vs. personal). If you are using your personal mobile device or tablet to access University data (emails, files, etc.) and would like to maintain this access, you will need to be enrolled.

What are the benefits?

The Mobile Application Management provides both users and administrators with several key benefits:

  • Securely enable personal device users to access University’s data and digital assets

  • Provides an overview of devices connected to systems which facilitates institutional planning (cybersecurity new applications/services)

  • University data and identity can be removed without users’ personal data or apps being affected

  • Enforce access policies, for example limit access of a shared document to a SharePoint link versus downloading the document on the personal device that has not been secured.

  • Remote locking and wiping capabilities for University devices

What will be changed for the public?

  • Find all the information here

  • The information the University can access is listed on the MAM website
