If you have taken on the role of intramural league team captain this trimester, the following responsibilities and reminders will be important for you to note.

The role of captain

Volleyball Team

Each intramural team at the University of Ottawa will select their team captain. The captain is ultimately responsible for all organization of the team and communication between team members and their league supervisor. It is very important that the captain attends as many league games as possible and communicates all pertinent information to teammates. Team captains must ensure all games run smoothly and players maintain a competitive, yet enjoyable intramural experience.

Please review all the captain's expectations and responsibilities below. If you have any questions, please contact your league supervisor.

Captain responsibilities

Important reminders

Team captains MUST attend the captains' meeting; if they are not available, there must be a team representative in attendance. If no team representative is available to attend this meeting, the team will be required to pay a $20 administrative fee prior to receiving their t-shirt/jersey bags and/or participating in their first game. The date and location of mandatory captains’ meetings are posted online.

Communication with your team

  • Inform all team members of the league schedule.
  • Communicate any pertinent information to team members throughout the season such as game cancellations, results, rules, etc.

Communication with staff

  • Ensure there is a representative to replace them in the event of an absence.
  • Notify the referee and league supervisor of any faulty or missing equipment.
  • Report any team changes, concerns, etc. to the league supervisor, as well as verify results and sign game sheets.
  • Cooperate with intramural administration throughout any disciplinary processes related to the team.

Player safety

  • Ensure that all teammates conduct themselves respectfully.
  • Cooperate with game officials, concerning league rules (e.g. no jewelry).

Injuries

  • In the event of an injury, inform the league supervisor, client services or facility staff immediately.
  • Provide requested contact information to league supervisor in the event of an incident or accident.

Captains meeting

A captains meeting will be held the Sunday before the first day of intramural competition to introduce captains to the intramural staff and review the sport and league rules, regulations, and procedures. Some topics in this meeting include but are not limited to: rosters; eligibility; disciplinary procedures; league- and sport-specific rules; accessing schedules and scores; forfeits; office hours; and contact information. The team captain is responsible for attending this meeting for their chosen sport(s). A captain may send a representative in their place should they be unable to attend the meeting. If no team representative attends, there will be a $20 forfeit fee.

Captains Meetings: January 12

Captains Meetings will take place at Montpetit Hall in Rooms 201 and 202. Each sport will have a meeting approximately 45 minutes in length. Team league captains have until Tuesday, January 7 at 4 p.m. to modify their rosters online free of charge. After this point, rosters will be frozen until Captains’ Day where changes will be $20 for any/all modifications (e.g., three player additions will cost $20). After Captains Day, roster modifications can only be made in the Intramural Office (Montpetit 102) during office hours and are $20 per change (e.g., three player additions will be $60). Individual league captains will be notified via email in January once rosters have been finalized. They are not required to attend Captains Day, but are welcome to attend the meeting if they would like.
