When ranking your CO-OP jobs, you may have questions about how the algorithm matches students to jobs. Refer to the information below, which explains more about how this process works.
The system matches students to jobs using a deferred acceptance algorithm (also called a Gale-Shapley algorithm). This algorithm makes it simple for you to rank jobs. It matches you to the best job in your ranking available to you. So, you can safely rank jobs in order of your actual preferences: rank your favourite job first, your second favourite job second, and so on.
If more than one job is available to you, the algorithm matches you to the job you ranked highest. If there’s a tie in your rankings, the algorithm picks one job randomly. So, enter the same rank for different jobs only if you think they’re equally good.
Q: Can I increase my chances of being matched by giving lots of jobs ranks of no. 2? A: No. This won’t increase your chances of being matched.
Q: If a job ranked me no. 1, will I risk not being matched if I don’t rank that same job no. 1? A: No. If job A ranks you no. 1, you are guaranteed to be matched as long as you don’t reject job A. The algorithm will match you to job A or to a job you rank higher than job A.
