In an increasingly digital world, having an online presence can take your business to the next level. A website is a great place to start. But just having a website isn’t everything. Your customers need it to come up when they do a search!

In the seemingly complicated world of what’s called “search engine optimization” (SEO), here are five quick tips to rock your website and make sure it comes up.

Make sure your site is mobile friendly

Your customers, and search engines, love a mobile-friendly website. Making sure your site is accessible, readable and optimized for all devices won’t just improve your user experience, but also improve your ranking on search engines. Luckily, many website builders, like Pagecloud, Squarespace and Wix, will auto-generate a mobile-friendly version of your website.

Secure your site

Securing your site will improve your ranking on search engines. What’s a secure site? One that uses a secure sockets layer (SSL) to provide an encrypted connection between the server and the user. How do you know if a site is secure? Check its URL! Secure website links start with “https,” like the URL of the website you’re reading this article on. If a website isn’t secure, its URL starts with “http” (sans s). Securing your site protects its sensitive data and software from being compromised.

Make sure your site is fast

Is there anything more annoying than a slow website? Honestly, yeah, there probably is. But it’s still super annoying. We’ve all been there, waiting impatiently, and it sucks. Search engines think the same thing. Fast websites look better to search engines, which improves your ranking and helps your site appear in searches.

Use site speed testers to identify elements on your website that are slowing it down. Some common culprits are large photos, improperly imbedded videos and too many ads on display.

Create new content

Content is king! Creating new, quality content for your website, rather than simply reposting other people’s content, can improve your ranking on search engines.

Be sure to use keywords in your URLs, meta descriptions, headings, subheadings and body copy to help your original content be found!

Get backlinks

A backlink is a link back to your website from another website. The quality of backlinks (preferably links coming from a higher domain authority than your site), the number of backlinks and the way people describe your website when backlinking can all have an impact on your site’s ranking on search engines.
