Biography

Dr. Jane Tyerman is an assistant professor in the School of Nursing at the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Ottawa.  She comes to the program with over 25 years of nursing experience in critical care, medical-surgical, and psychiatric clinical practice. Additionally, she has over 15 years experience involving clinical simulation design, facilitation, evaluation, and virtual simulation game development.  Her research can be categorized into two streams: (1) educational research focusing on simulation and virtual gaming to support the development of nursing clinical competencies; and (2) Neurofeedback as an intervention for post-cancer cognitive impairment and fatigue, and as supportive therapy for chronic conditions such as stress/anxiety, migraines, and chronic pain.  Dr. Tyerman is a leader in nursing simulation as she has developed and teaches various specialty simulation course for the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing (CASN), the Canadian Alliance of Nurse Educators Using Simulation (CAN-Sim), International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL), and the Ontario Simulation Alliance (OSA). Dr. Tyerman is the 2019 recipient of the CASN award for Excellence in Nursing Education based on her innovative use of simulation.
