We would like to pay tribute to the colleagues we have lost. As we reflect on their accomplishments, we are reminded of their profound dedication to enrich the lives of others. We honour their memory and celebrate the legacy they leave behind.
Eugene Menard

Dr. Eugène (Gene) André Ménard

March 31, 1935 - July 1, 2022

It is with deep sadness that we learned of the passing of Dr. Eugène Ménard on July 01, 2022 after a brave and courageous journey with Myeloma.

Eugène dedicated his career life to caring for his patients, as a pediatric anesthesiologist at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO), where he will be remembered as an admirably patient and exceptionally compassionate physician and friend.  He was an inspiration to his colleagues; as well as a dedicated mentor to residents of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Ottawa, with a reputation of having been extremely generous with sharing his breadth of experience and depth of knowledge.

As a department, our thoughts and condolences are with Eugène’s family.  A donation has been made in memoriam to The CHEO Foundation.

John Green

Dr. John (Jack) Green

December 04, 1924 - September 30, 2022

It is with a heavy heart that I relay this news of Dr. John (Jack) Green's passing on September 30, 2022, at the age of 98 years.

As many of you know, Dr. Green was a member of the Department of Anesthesiology at the Ottawa Civic Hospital for 38 years and an Associate Professor with the University of Ottawa.

With Dr. Anne Lui’s permission, I would like to share some of the fond memories she recalled of his mentorship early in her career:

"John Green was an exceptional mentor during my early years in the Department of Anesthesia at the Civic. He was renowned as the go to person for rescuing failed intubations in the days when there were no glidescopes, no fiberoptic bronchoscopes. Just old-fashioned straight blades and McCoy laryngoscopes. His quiet reassuring manner and dry sense of humour calmed the panic, or in his words, pandemonium, in the OR. His constant reference to motorcycles as murder cycles would deter anyone from considering that mode of transportation."

As a department, our thoughts and condolences are with Dr. Green's family.  A donation has been made in memoriam to the Canadian Anesthesia Research Foundation at CAS.

Gilles de la Salle

Dr. Gilles de la Salle

1946-2023

It is with deep sadness that we recently learned of Dr. Gilles de la Salle’s passing.

As many of you know, Gilles was an original member of the Division of Cardiac Anesthesiology at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, where he worked for 30 years before going to work at the Kemptville District Hospital after an initial retirement.

Gilles is fondly remembered by his former associates in the Division and perioperative colleagues at the Heart Institute, who shared some of the following comments:

“I have fond memories of the care he provided and his collegiality as a colleague. He was part of the pioneering days of UOHI upon which we have built what we have today.”

“He was a good clinical mentor to me and became a great work colleague after I joined our Division and Department. He was really liked by all the staff at the Heart Institute.”

On behalf of the department at large and the Division of Cardiac Anesthesiology, our thoughts and condolences are with Gilles’s family.  A donation has been made in memoriam to The Ottawa Mission.
