As the Vice-Chair of Research, I am pleased to provide an update on the scholarly achievements of our department. Since assuming this role approximately one year ago, I have continually been impressed with the depth and breadth of scholarship within our department. Our faculty and trainees consistently excel in securing national and international grants, publishing in top journals, and receiving awards and accolades.

Our faculty continues to shine by securing grants from the most competitive funders. This includes multiple grants from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the major funder of biomedical research in Canada. This is particularly notable since usual success rates for CIHR grants are only 15-20% for most competitions. In addition, our department members have secured funding from the New Frontiers in Research Fund (another federally funded agency), as well as Physicians' Services Incorporated, and the Canadian Anesthesiologist’s Society. These continued successes on the grant front have translated to larger research teams, and more opportunities for trainees to actively participate in successful research programs.

We also  continue to excel in the dissemination of our scholarly work.  One metric is the number of contributions to the Canadian Journal of Anesthesia, the premier national journal of our specialty. Over the last three years, our department has led 117 publications in The Journal, the second-highest number among all departments in the country.

Looking ahead, we can anticipate continued growth and impact in our scholarly endeavors. These accomplishments are a testament to the dedication and expertise of our faculty and trainees who consistently strengthen our position as a leading academic department of anesthesia.

Sincerely,

Manoj Lalu
