The Ottawa Hospital (TOH), a tertiary care center, in affiliation with the University of Ottawa, and a reference center in the Champlain LHIN (Local Health Integration Network, Eastern Ontario, Canada), offers in-depth fellowship trainings in multiple anesthesiology subspecialties. Our fellows are trained across the three campuses of The Ottawa Hospital (Civic, General and Riverside campuses) as well as at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) and at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute (OHI) for pediatric anesthesiology and for cardiac anesthesiology respectively. The Ottawa Hospital Operating Rooms provide at least 35,000 surgeries per year to patients from our local and northern catchment areas.

Our dynamic team of subspecialty Fellowship Leads is comprised of clinical experts, established and well renowned researchers, and patient care leaders who have crafted detailed curricula for their fellowship programs. Our faculty also includes front-runners in the areas of education and patient safety/quality improvement.

The University of Ottawa Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine (DAPM) is well-known for the quality and dedication of its clinical teachers and takes great pride in providing a positive and pleasurable learning environment.

In addition to Canada being the number 1 country in the world for quality of life (for a 4th year in a row in 2019, as per U.S. News and World Report), the City of Ottawa, Canada’s Capital City, has also been consistently ranked as one of the top 20 cities in the world for quality of life. Ottawa is renowned for its summer and winter outdoor sports, as well as its many cultural events, museums and attractions. Ottawa’s culinary scene is also quite exceptional with many highly ranked and diverse restaurants.

For a great overview of what the city has to offer please refer yourself to the Ottawa Tourism Webpage, you will find all the details regarding our beautiful city.

Please contact us should you have any questions, and we look forward to the prospect of working with you!

Fellowships in Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine

Fellowship Programs

Fellowship programs are generally one year in length, with an academic year of July 1 – June 30. Fellowship training is limited to a maximum of two years at TOH. Fellows may work at one or more of our partner hospitals during their training, with the expectation that they will do a mix of generalist anesthesia and subspecialty anesthesia.

In addition to gaining specific expertise in their chosen area of training, fellows are expected to contribute academically to their field during their fellowship year. Opportunities in research, education, patient safety and other areas are available.

Candidates should have completed their anesthesia training and passed all certification exams required for the practice of anesthesia in the country where their training was undertaken. Candidates from the United Kingdom must have at least 30 months of clinical anesthesia experience, plus successful completion of certification examinations.

If the applicant's medical training was done in a language other than English, the applicant is required to take an English proficiency test and submit the score with their application. Acceptable tests include the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL or TOEFL-lbt), the Test of Spoken English (TSE), or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam.

See application instructions for more information.
