1.1 A professor emeritus shall:

a. have made an exceptional contribution to university life either through research or through contribution to other areas of university activity. Examples of ‘exceptional contribution’ might include: published research that has brought  recognition to the University; innovations in educational programs or delivery in clinical or basic sciences; exceptional contribution to administration and leadership, such as leading curriculum change or chairing a department through impressive growth;

b. have been a Full Professor as Full Time Academic (FTA) with continued contribution at the  University of Ottawa; and  

c. the request should be made within six (6) months before or twelve (12) months after the individual ceases to be a member of the academic staff of the University of Ottawa and is eligible for retirement;

d. Notwithstanding, the Faculty of Medicine can make exceptions to clause c above should the Faculty Member meet the criteria for professor emeritus status.

e. A professor emeritus may still hold appointments at the affiliated hospitals but shall not be considered for regular full-time or part-time academic appointments at the University.

2.1 The rank of Professor Emeritus is awarded by the Joint Committee of the Board and the Senate of the University, upon recommendation of the Dean and the Clinical Teaching Personnel Committee (CTPC). A Faculty member wishing to be considered for the rank of Professor Emeritus must submit a request in writing to the Dean, and must also submit an application to the Dean that provides evidence of the exceptional nature of their academic contributions to the University of Ottawa, along with a current CV. The member's Departmental Teaching Personnel Committee (DTPC) must also review the application and provide feedback to the Dean through the Chair of the Department. The CTPC and the Dean will judge the merit of the application and inform the Joint Committee of the University of their recommendation. The decision to award Professor Emeritus status is made by the Joint Committee; the decision of the Joint Committee is final and there shall be no appeals. The status shall be awarded only to exceptional candidates.

3.1 A professor emeritus shall have the following privileges:

1. invitation to all official ceremonies and receptions of the University, including those for teaching personnel only;
2.  access to all University of Ottawa libraries and their services;
3. continued listing among official University of Ottawa professors, with the new title indicated; and
4. supervision or co-supervision of graduate students, upon recommendation of the relevant Department chair to the Dean.
