Program Objectives

We are offering an annual scholarship program to give medical students the opportunity to learn about research. This experience, carried out under the supervision of a faculy member in the Faculty of Medicine, will enable them to acquire new knowledge. This program targets projects dealing with research in minority Francophone communities and projects dealing with medical and/or health education issues in the Canadian Arctic.

This initiative is made possible through the partnership of the Consortium national de formation en santé (CNFS) — University of Ottawa Chapter and the Government of Nunavut via the Réseau santé en français au Nunavut.

For 2022, two scholarships will be offered. Each will be used to support the salary of a student working on one of the proposed projects. The two scholarships will be distributed as follows:

1. 1 annual award of $5000 to fund a project on research in a minority Francophone community and covering the period from June 1, 2022, to May 31, 2023.

2. 1 annual award of $5000 to fund a project on medical and/or health education issues in the Canadian Arctic and covering the period from June 1, 2022, to May 31, 2023. This award will be open to all faculty/researchers in the competition and will be offered to a professor/researcher whose research team includes a co-investigator affiliated with the Government of Nunavut Department of Health.

Eligibility criteria for faculty/researchers

To have access to Francophone Affairs’ French-language research funds, faculty/researchers must:

• be affiliated with the University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Medicine

• submit a duly completed research initiation scholarship application form for faculty/researchers to Francophone Affairs by noon on February 7, 2022 (ET). Each professor/researcher may submit only one project and may supervise only one student for this competition.

Faculty/researcher responsibilities

• Plan a project in which the day-to-day work is done in French and that is achievable for a student within the scholarship period.

• Collaborate with the Assistant Dean and the medical education research manager of Francophone Affairs.

• Be available to support the student for the project duration.

• Be present on the day the project is presented at the conference.

• Supervise the student in writing the ethics approval application (if applicable).

• Submit a publication of the research results.

• Acknowledge the support of Francophone Affairs, the CNFS and the Government of Nunavut in the submission of any abstract, presentation or publication.

Eligibility criteria for students

• Be enrolled in the University of Ottawa’s medical school program.

• Have an interest in research in French.

• Submit a research scholarship application form for students to Francophone Affairs before 4:00 p.m. on February 25, 2022.

Student responsibilities (depending on the project)

• Conduct research in French.

• Communicate the results in French in an abstract for a conference and/or a peer-reviewed scientific journal.

• Contribute to writing the ethics approval application (if applicable).

• Be available for the full period of the project to work and collaborate with the supervisor.

• Be available to collaborate with the Francophone Affairs research manager.

• Respect the project deadline.

• Contribute to preparing the dissemination tool at the conference (e.g., poster, oral presentation, workshop).

• Contribute to writing a scientific article for publication in a peer-reviewed scientific journal (if applicable).

• Complete the Francophone Affairs research project report form at mid-project and at project end.

• Acknowledge the support of Francophone Affairs, the CNFS and the Government of Nunavut in the submission of any abstract, presentation or publication.

Selection process

During the selection process, faculty/researchers will choose their scholarship students with the facilitation of Francophone Affairs. To do this:

1. The selection committee will meet to choose the projects proposed by the faculty/researchers. The chosen projects will be sent to the students and published on the Francophone Affairs website.

2. Students will submit the projects they are interested in and their curriculum vitae to the selection committee.

3. Student applications will then be forwarded to the faculty/researchers so they can make their choice of students. The faculty/researchers may interview the students as necessary.

4. The faculty/researchers will communicate their choice of students to the selection committee in order to finalize the match and make the announcement to the students.

Governance of the selection committee

The selection committee will be composed of:

• at least 3 members affiliated with the University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine’s Francophone Affairs

• 1 representative from the Consortium national de formation en santé

• 1 representative from RESEFAN

• 1 University of Ottawa medical student

The committee will be chaired by a member of the Francophone Affairs team. Also, a deliberate effort will be made to ensure that the committee includes equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI).

N.B.: A professor/researcher who applies for this scholarship program cannot sit on the selection committee.

• February 7, 2022: Deadline for submission of project descriptions by professors/researchers

• February 9, 2022: Meeting of the selection committee and unveiling of projects for 2022 to students

• February 16, 2022: Student application process begins

• February 25, 2022: Deadline for the student application process

• Week of March 7, 2022: Letters of offer sent to students

• June 1, 2022: Start date of projects

• August 31, 2022: End of the 1st project on the Canadian Arctic

• May 31, 2023: End of the project on the minority Francophonie and the 2nd project on the Canadian Arctic
