Recruitment

Activities adapted to the ongoing pandemic
The Student for a Day Program remained a virtual activity in 2021-2022 due to the ongoing pandemic. Some 49 high school and CEGEP students had an opportunity to experience university by speaking to the recruitment coordinator and a Faculty professor or student.
In March 2022, over 400 applicants participated in the Spring Open House on campus, the first in-person event since the start of the pandemic
Our graduate students offered close to 60 workshops on social science topics and reached more than 30 high school across the province.

Support in Adjusting to Life at University

The pandemic had a significant impact on the integration of new students in the Fall of 2021. Due to pandemic-related restrictions, the faculty’s main activities remained online. More than 1400 students attended the online information sessions offered by the Faculty and academic units. However, a temporary lifting of some health measures allowed the Faculty to host in-person information sessions for 200 students.

Despite the pandemic, the Office of Undergraduate Studies maintained a high quality of service and continued to support and guide our 9500 undergraduate students in their academic progress. In addition to communicating with them by email, the OUS team continued to use the QLess platform so that students could contact or make appointments online with team members.

The Student Experience Centre also continued to virtually support academic success by helping students adjust to the university environment and assisting them in becoming more independent. In 2021-2022, the Centre:

  • Counted on 12 skilled, dedicated student mentors from diverse backgrounds
  • Offered over 300 individual online meetings or chat sessions
  • Coordinated 67 study group sessions for first- and second-year courses, in which 827 students participated
  • Hosted the Student Experience Week twice, attracting over 200 students to its workshop

Engagement and Excellence

Directed research for fourth-year students — FSS 4150 / FSS 4550

As part of these two courses, 73 students undertook individual or small group research projects in several of our disciplines, in close cooperation with a professor. Students continued to have the opportunity to participate in applied research internships in two Faculty centres: the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research on Citizenship and Minorities (CIRCEM) and the Centre on Governance(COG).

Scholarships

The Faculty awarded more than $500,000 in scholarships to over 200 students in 2021-2022.
