The successful candidate will hold a clinical non-tenure track position with the Faculty ofMedicine’s Department of Medicine, its affiliated hospital The Ottawa Hospital, and its affiliated research institute (The Ottawa HospitalResearch Institute ; OHRI with the potential for other cross-appointments). The candidate will be a member of the Brain-Heart Interconnectome (BHI). The BHI is a ground-breaking interdisciplinary research program aimed at accelerating prevention, detection, treatment and care of interconnected brain and heart disorders through research co-produced with patients and other knowledge users. The Chairholder will hold, or will be eligible to hold a licence to practice medicine with the College of Physician and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO).
We are interested in attracting candidates with demonstrated strengths in acute stroke management and expertise related to the interconnections between stroke and other brain and heart conditions. This research will directly improve the health of the community served by the University of Ottawa and beyond through the identification of novel treatments and methods for stroke. It is expected that the incumbent researcher will have formal graduate training and expertise in stroke clinical research and trials. We are interested in researchers with demonstrated strengths in areas that may include but are not limited to:
- Advancing the science of cerebrovascular medicine with an emphasis on the acute management and prevention of stroke and intracerebral hemorrhage;
- Addressing current and future health needs of stroke patients in Canada and worldwide, including developing and implementing effective interventions to improve the short- and long-term outcomes for patients with stroke;
- Conducting imaging research to identify, risk stratify and direct therapy in patients with cerebrovascular disease;
- Conducting research on the interconnections between brain and heart conditions;
- Developing innovative methods and strategies in the clinical design of stroke clinical trials;
- Conducting research on interventions such as thrombolysis and hemostatsis in stroke and intracerebral hemorrhage;
- Leading or facilitating phase 2 and 3 multi-centre clinical trials of novel acute stroke therapies;
- Seeking and maintaining meaningful international collaborations in stroke research;
- Attracting competitive Canadian and international trainees.
The successful candidate will become an integral part of a dynamic, collaborative, and interconnected research environment in the Faculty of Medicine and its associated Research Institutes. As Chair, the researcher will also directly contribute to development of clinical trials designed to improve the survival or quality of life of stroke patients.
Tier 1 Chairs, tenable for seven years and renewable once, are for outstanding researchers acknowledged by their peers as world leaders in their fields. For each Tier 1 Chair, the institution receives $200,000 annually for seven years. Nominees for Tier 1 Chair positions must be full professors or associate professors who are expected to be promoted to the full professor level within one or two years of the nomination. Alternatively, if they come from outside the academic sector, nominees must possess the necessary qualifications to be appointed at these levels. New CRC nominees are also eligible for infrastructure support from the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) to help acquire state-of-the-art equipment essential to their work.
