JUNE 8, 2022 - Human Rights Due Diligence Legislation: Insights from Europe and Latin America, Lessons for Canada

European states and the EU are at the vanguard of introducing human rights due diligence legislation that would require corporations to take measures to prevent and address the risks they pose to human rights in their supply chains and their transnational business operations. At the United Nations, an Open-Ended Intergovernmental Working Group of the Human Rights Council is engaged in the negotiation of a treaty on business and human rights, that would obligate states to mandate human rights due diligence and to establish effective remedies for victims of business-related human rights abuses. The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights in its thematic hearings and reports, has called on Canada to regulate its extractive companies operating abroad. This webinar brings together a group of experts for a conversation about what lessons can be drawn from these initiatives and interventions for Canada, which has so far preferred a soft approach to governing the transnational activities of Canadian companies.
