Learn more about our Advanced Clinical Practice fellowship with the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine.

Program Overview

The Advanced Clinical Practice Fellowship is designed for the anesthesiologist who would like to gain more experience in the broad range of surgical specialties that a tertiary care facility can offer, including neurosurgery, vascular, ENT, urology, obstetrics, orthopedics and trauma. Furthermore, fellows will also have the opportunity to enhance their skills as perioperative physicians by rotating on the acute pain service and in the pre-operative assessment unit. This fellowship is well suited to the recent graduate who would like an additional year of experience prior to commencing independent practice, as well as candidates preparing for licensing exams wishing to integrate into the Canadian Healthcare system. There will be 2-4 positions available each academic year.

Goals and Objectives

By the end of the fellowship, the fellow will be able to do the following:

  • Tailor anesthetic technique to optimize flow in high turnover ambulatory anesthesia lists.
  • Individualize anesthesia for morbidly obese patients having gastric bypass surgery.
  • Enhance knowledge of pharmacology to manage patients on chronic opioids, who are having painful procedures.
  • Gain experience in regional and neuraxial anesthesia techniques.
  • Perform appropriate assessments and optimization of comorbidities prior to surgery.
